it's ok, I forgive ya.

I got bigger butts to kick this weekend than to be upset over lineage of chickens
wink.png

I really do understand lineage and pure breds - it just ticked me off that that thread earlier (which most of you probably missed) was so nasty about some chick trying to sell mutt hatching eggs on ebay - I mean she was honest about them being mixed breed (maran and barred rock - maran roo over both types of hens) and she started the auction at 99 cents with a 7.10 ship!!!!

She wasn't ripping anyone off, or lying - and yet people were saying how "disgusting" it was and how "laughable" it was.

Lineage I can understand - but elitist snobs just make me want to put someone in their place

Ok, finally I have time to chat!! Can you believe that I have fallen asleep twice this week with my computer on my lap? Both times it was about 9 p.m. when I zonked out!!
roll.png
Don't know what's up with that, I stayed up till almost 1:30 last night with no problem!

Well anyway, I had a good day at the sale today. I almost came home empty handed! I had taken 2 ducks I got from ladrifter, they were both drakes, so not needed (since I already have 7!!). I also took all my rabbits, 2 mini-rex, a mini-rex mix, a dutch, and 2 mixed breeds of unknown types. I also took all my jumbo and A&M babies, but those were going to someone pre-arranged. Anyway, I came home with a chicken
roll.png
Notice, I had no chickens with me when I left!! The person next to me (that guy that usually parks right in front of the doors, with the big horse trailer full of birds?) had day-old chicks in his trailer, and my son saw them
roll.png

'Mommy, I want a baby chicken!'
rant.gif
'Cris, honey, you have 6 baby chickens in the incubator at home'
'but dis is so wittle bitty cutie one mommy'
hmm.png

So, silly me asks how much, and he wants $.80 per chick. So we have another new chicken. Just what I needed, some more mutt bantams!!
gig.gif

Oh, and I also sold all my baby buttons today as well, so it was a pretty good day.

Anyway Meri, about the mixed/pure debate. Personally, I love mixed breeds, for the same reasons you stated. Mixed breed dogs to me seem to have more character. When it comes to birds, I like the thrill of the unknown. When you have pures, no matter what, you know what you are getting. There is no surprise.

However, most people aren't like that. So I am trying to have pures, since people will pay more for the eggs. That, unfortunately, is what I'm needing right now. I also have a very hard time selling mixed breeds, probably due to the fact that I only raise bantams. No one wants a bird they can't make money from, and which isn't big enough to eat. Now personally, I don't care what 'line' they are from, unless it is something very-sought-after like silkies or marans. I probably couldn't tell you what 'line' all my millies are from. They look like millies, so that's what matters to me. But I don't see the big deal about purposely mixing them, especially with cuckoo marans and barred rocks. They look basically the same was probably the biggest problem with those. But for the people to see that auction and get all persnickety about it is just silly. There are a lot of people on here that seem to think their poop doesn't stink. I think it would have been better for the mods to lock the thread and have a last post that scolded them for their foolishness, but oh well, that's the way things go.

OH!!! I almost forgot!! I am sooooooo glad that it snowed!! I found my cayuga's nest! Of course it was on the side of the creek, actually about 12 feet above it. Right next to the side of the drop off!!
th.gif
After the snow melted, dad was able to go down in there and get the eggs. If she hadn't had them so close to the side, I probably would have left them there. But when the ducklings would have hatched,, they probably would have fallen off and washed down the creek!! So she will just have to move somewhere else! She had 3 eggs in there, so they aren't too old. I really need to start penning them up at night so I can find the eggs. I'm supposed to be getting some woven wire this week, so maybe I can use that to put them in at night. I have checked for eggs as early as 7 a.m. and all of them have already laid, so I won't have to keep them penned up for too long. Plus, having a pen will make me feel better about the 'babies' that will be going out there in the next few weeks.

Sorry for the book guys!

I think it depend's on what you cross up to make mutt's??? Banty chicken's are the best to cross. I will try anything once...lol and I have also sold some really freaky crossed up bantie's for good money. Some people like to have chicken's that no one has. So, I just wanted to put in my 2 cent's worth...lol My jizzle's are easy to sell. And I am working on another cross experiment, so I will let y'all know how it come's out...oh yeah, has anyone ever seen yellow tinted frizzle cochin's? I have some and have never saw any before...will show y'all some pic's later. I am getting ready to go to Lexington to pick up some more Banty chicken's...Y'all take care and keep hatching

...Let's flood the market with chicken's

Well, I'm here finally - had to go to the bank this morning.

I walked into see four ladies standing there, chatting (it was pretty dead at that time of day on a saturday - and one asked me "can I help you" and I say "yeah, I need to speak to a manager" She asks why and I say "because I'm giving someone the opportunity to talk me out of closing my account here." She hurried to find the manager after that
wink.png
.

I ended up leaving my money there for now (the open envelope had nothing important inside,it turns out, but I did let him know that I was not comfortable leaving my money there, and the next time anything like this happened I would be taking all my money out and not discussing it with him.)

I left the money there because A) I have to get my truck fixed, and will need to pay for that (would rather not carry the cash) and B) my husband hates change and was stressing over opening new accounts, setting up for wire transfers, etc... The man makes me crazy sometimes he is so against change. And yes, it would have been a pain in the butt - but worth it to save my money and my identity.

I explained to the bank manager that I am retired - what money I have in various banks, is what I have - and I don't want to try to get a job in today's economy. If I don't feel that my money is safe, I will put it elsewhere.

So, they get one last chance. But I still would rather put my money somewhere else.

Update on my marans chickens for sale found the first egg today. Not a monster but its pretty dark i think at lest a 4 or 5? Forgive the sad quality pic.

Well, I guess my friend who wanted those geese doesn't want them anymore, so I have a pair of geese.

They're pretty, and not agressive, so I don't mind them. I've been letting them out during the day, and they go into the chicken run at night by themselves if I shoo the chickens in and leave the door open to the run. Today they noticed the chickens getting treats and came running to get some, too. They aren't friendly geese, they will avoid me if possible, but they are getting more used to me walking around near them without running in the opposite direction.

Plus
lau.gif
they're mutts. I been calling them "Benny and Joon", I guess that'll be their name now. (that's a cute movie
big_smile.png
)

I'll get some pics later to post them. I was planning to wait on geese, myself, til the pen was built and I had a safe place for them, but the dogs don't bother them much - they tried to chase them at first, but the gander hissed at them and they stopped dead when they realized he was nearly their size. (he actually is as big as Toby is)

Maybe I can get some toulouse goslings sometime down the road.

Still no sign of the blue call duck - I am thinking she's gone - must have gotten carried off by a hawk, cause I honestly didn't hear a thing when it happened.

Although it would be cool if she came strolling back in a month or so with a bunch of babies in tow - so I'm not giving up totally until more time has passed. Plus, even if she is sitting somewhere, without protection, I don't give her much of a chance to be safe enough to sit long enough to hatch eggs.

Nice, I wouldn't mind having a maran or two for the egg color, would be neat, but I don't want to "feed the monster", if ya know what I mean

eta - my husband says I'm just too "bloody stubborn" to run with the crowd.

We don't have any daffodils in our yard
sad.png
There are daffodils everywhere around us, but none right here. I have seen a lot of blooming things, dad's peach tree had buds on it before the snow, hopefully the cold didn't kill them
fl.gif

I'm gonna go to the hay pasture and dig some daffodils up, I think. I love daffodils!! I'm also gonna steal some forsythia bush branches from somewhere, I like those too. But it seems like everyone has them!!
