Kentucky people

You're right about bantams not fitting into my "flock plans", ( as if I really plan anything that closely).

I got the bantam rocks because no one else seemed to want them during the coldest time of the winter. Out of 8 eggs I only got these two to hatch. I bought some full size barred rocks at the same time just to fill the bator and do a check on the hatch. I got 11 of 12 to hatch of them so I don't think it was my bator. Since the Bantams came from Washington state I think they flew here and the cold flight might have done a number on them.

I think the Paris swap is the closest to me, or I might take them to the cattle yard here in Lex and see if anyone might be interested.

What would a 5 week old BR go for? About $5 or so for a hen? Newly hatched chicks sell for about $2.50. Maybe I should add about 50 cents per week.

Let's see... hatcheries sell laying hens for about $18 plus shipping...
Let's say about $20 per hen at 25 weeks equals 2.50 + ( 25 x 50 cents) equals 2.50 + 12.50 = $15 per chick and since no one wants roos then the laying hens for $20 and an adult roo for $10.

Yeah... I think about 2.50 per chick plus 50 cents per week of age. ought to do it. What do youall think?

If I cannot sell the roos then they will become my capon experiment.

I sold a young pair of BR last week at auction. I wanted $20 for the pair, ended up getting $15. Still not that bad. I probably could have gotten more for them if I would have held them a while longer, but I needed the room and didn't need a big stock chicken to feed. They were 15 weeks old m/l.

Thanks Shelleyed.

Let's see... 2.50 for a newly hatched pullet + 15 weeks x 50 cents/week = $10 each for hens

For a roo ... $1.00 hatchery price for a newly hatched roo + 15 weeks x 25 cents/week = $4.75.

Okay I think I have a formula to go by. Except the roos are a loosing deal because they eat just as much as a hen. So... if you go by that then... $1.00 + 15 x 50 cents = $8.50.

So I think that you should sell the roos early and the hens later. Let's see... younger chicks eat less than older chicks so cost per week should be exponential according to weight... so....

I don't know if you have noticed but sometimes I get obsessive about figuring out things which have very little importance other than it keeps my mind busy. (What mind I have left...)

I need to keep better records... about weight of feed per bird type or weight.... Yeah... I'm too far gone to save now.

I now have 3 white silkie babies that are purebred!! I hatched one of these eggs before, and it was mixed with something! The baby had racing stripes! These are pure white

I also had a tibetan coturnix hatch. They weren't due till Thursday, so it's a bit early. Poor baby had it's head stuck in between the turner rack and the side of the turner!!

Thank goodness I checked that bator when I did!!

Anyone want a buttercup, golden lakenvelder, or mille fleur d'uccles cockerel? That seems to be the majority of what I've been hatching lately. One chick wonders that turn out to be roos!! I also have a day-old silver phoenix chick of undetermined sex that is available. Yet another one chick wonder hatch

Can you believe the ticks are out already?? I had a tiny one crawling on my arm yesterday, and today I had a huge one crawling up my cheek!! Those @#$% Guineas better get busy and earn their keep fast!!

He's a Virgo - if you put any stock into star signs (I don't usually, but most Virgos I know are pretty picky when it comes to the fine details.). Oddly enough my three best friends in my entire life have been Virgos - I must be a Virgo magnet - maybe someone is telling me to pay closer attention to details - or they are offering me lots of friends to do it for me, so I can go party with Jose' .

I'm a Sagicrabbyass. We like to party and travel and procrastinate.

Hey Andora your in box is full. I'll tell ya bout my roos.

Everybody else... Rusty is okay. I went out and took him out of the coop and petted him. Those two inch spurs are impressive as well as his beak. I think he could do some real damage if he were mean. He bites at me but doesn't resist when I pet him. The other two roos he's in with stay out of his way. They look good, just very warry.
