Who is it...If he's been there for more then 2 years he probably had me in class LOL

Nate

Actually this is only his second year there. He teaches music, humanities, and theater. If you go see the high school's play next week he is in charge of that.

OH...well I dont go to that place for anything lol...Just some FFA Alumni stuff on occassion...

Heyy guys. I was just wondering if this was safe or not?

Can my chicks breathe?
There are a few wholes scattered about in the brooder box, and there is a couple of places near the light and towards the end of the box that air can go through. Will this hurt my chicks in any way?

I would be scared of that set up, but I am new. I totally understand WANTING that set up since my house is currently covered in THICK dust but I don't know about it for the chickens' sake.
In other news we finally got the coop finished enough to put the chicks outside. I will have to post a couple pics later-- got to get more work done while it is light out then go buy them some more sand for a nice sandbox

.
Actually- a question. At this time of year with night temps around 50-55 do I need a heat lamp for them at 6 weeks? They are almost completely feathered.

Here are the little lovelies in their new home (sorry for all the pics, but I am infatuated). The inside of the coop is finished except for the droppings board under the roosts and the nest boxes which are going to stick out for easy access and more room for the birds. I went out after sundown and found them all huddled on the 2x4 we have by the door to keep wood pellets in so I moved them to their roosts. Just went out again and they are sleeping blissfully on the roosts.

but been so busy, just haven't been online at all.

Sis went home yesterday, and it finally stopped raining, so I planted a bunch of the stuff she brought me - I still have some to plant today.

That dang 4 inches of rain (thursday night) drowned three of my brahma chicks. I had them in the lower coop (top cell) and it got so saturated in there, they got wet and drowned!! (I had low spots in the bedding from them digging, and the ground was already saturated and it puddled). So, the Brahmas are in the house again, until it dries out a bit. I saved one of them (besides the three that drowned), it was wet, (but not waterlogged) and dumpy acting, brought her inside first and she warmed up and is fine.

Sheesh, first I lose two to the heat (cause I had them inside in the hatchery room when it got so hot) then I put them outside so they'll be cooler and they drown. Gotta love Spring, eh?
I still have plenty enough for me, if they all live from here on out, just makes me angry that they died, and it was mostly my own fault - shoulda taken them in when the rain got so bad.

I need to butcher cornish cross soon - they are huge and if it warms up much, they'll be dropping dead on me from the heat. They are almost 8 weeks old, now, anyway, so it's time. Just been waiting for a day when I didn't have it pouring rain outside.

All the other chickies seem to be doing great. The older baby duckies have integrated nicely with the adult ducks, now - no one is picking on them anymore, they all get along great. In fact, DD has taken a liking to the babies and she follows (herds) them around all the time.
The other 5 little babies are still in the run, not in with the ducks, cause they are too little still for that pen. Spiffy, (the older baby who looked silverish) is absolutely the most gorgeous baby here!! She is a silver swedish pattern, and she is so pretty. I need to get updated pics of them all.

So, I have about three days until my mom and stepdad come down.

It's not like they could give me a week or so to recover from my sister being here, they got to run right down here to visit. I tried to explain this to them nicely, so instead of coming Monday she decided to wait til Wednesday

gee, thanks, that helps.

So, I probably won't have much chance to be on again the next two weeks or so. I can't wait til graduation is over with and the kid is done with school, and Mom and Budd can go home (cause even though they say they are staying three weeks I know they won't last that long, they get hot, or bored, or whatever, and want to go home.)

I'm tired just thinking about it

I so hope friday is nice, because I really need to go to Sano. I have got to thin out the brooder coop some. And that red roo is crowing, now, so he definately has to go.

Well, gonna try to catch up a little on byc this morning.

BTW - Welcome to all the newcomers.
