Kentucky people

Hey Shelley - Cortni and Layne have renamed the pup Daisy, she likes her new name. And I think she likes having her own place...We tried her out yesterday walking around the back with her(no leash) and she kept looking back at the pen like she really wished we'd just let her go back in but she did walk with us and stop when we stopped. And when we did let her go back she went right in turned around and sat down. Ron really likes her, that's a good thing. She only got out once and we found that Ron left the gate to the front pen opened and she went through a hole between the pens and got out...But she was just sitting in the right side of the leanto when Ron walked back there to check on her.
My hope is that we get her trained well enough to be able to keep her in there with the big chickens so we can leave the hatch opened all the time and she can sleep on the floor in the big coop, then we can take the fence down between the two runs and enlarge the main one even more, we'll keep plenty of play chews, balls, and toys for her and take her out of the pen to play daily...Nothin will try to get the chickens with a dog in there. If she does try to taste a chicken we'll just use the Casada's method of making them taste bad to her. I think she'll learn quickly though, I never saw her bother or even pay much attention to the chickens when we were visiting you, and she won't be able to reach eggs cause they'll be up by the perch. What do you think? Think it is possible?

Oh yeah forgot to tell you... One of the Casada's Guineas has taken in the two white silkies from our trip last week and I think it is taking in the white Cochin bantam and the red pullet from this weeks trip(at least it didn't run those two off like it did the rest of the new nosies). It stays right with the babies, sleeps on the ground guarding them and won't let anything around them human or animal...It's really funny to see. Marianne said all their Guinease are like that, with babies AND sick chickens, they take care of them til the chicken no longer needs them. Marianne thinks they are so attentive because they haven't been able to keep eggs long enough to hatch them(something takes them) so they just take care of and mother the underdogs or babies.

That's funny about the guineas. Mine really hate the chickens, especially the red ones.
That pup was the good one of the bunch, Cutie Pie and the male were the trouble makers. But yours did like to get eggs, but usually one of the others found them first, and she just went along for the ride. She is a very good pup. We tied cutie pie up, and the other one is still running loose. I guess dad will wait until he kills another chicken before doing something with him. Can't keep him in that shed, I know dad will forget about him, and I'm not going to mess with him. We'll see how he does without his partner in crime (Cutie Pie).

Cortni will be happy to hear that Cutie Pie didn't die, she was really worried about her. If you guys ever have to dispose of them later let us know and we'll contact the local Humane Society here to see if they can take them first...They are no kill where our dog pound is a kill shelter(don't like our Dog pound)

I am in Northern Kentucky, Highland Heights, near NKU. Very urban here but i have my back yard coop going strong. I have 9 hens and should be getting eggs soon. I am very new to this but i am loving it.

so... do they have a smiley that is a person smacking themselves?

I did my morning chores - about an hour ago....

Just went to look in on everyone int he brooder room - one baby quail is missing. I look high and low - it's a small brooder, not many places for him to hide, and I doubt he can get out from the top.

He was under the waterer. He is alive, sort of squishy looking, and staggering, but he is alive and moving, I warmed him up and put him back in the brooder - I hope he's ok.

gggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Meri...I know the feeling..when we got our meaties, I set them all up in the brooder box, fixed the water set it in there, went back an hour or so later, the chicks were sleeping..I counted them..one short, counted again..one short..something told me to lift the waterer..there he was but he was gone..I guess because of the shavings he just sank down in it..

Sandi!! Lots more baby Silkies just hatched out. One of them I can't figure out at all..He is brown, kind of chipmuncky..lol. I don't have any colors that will make brown. And as you know, my Silkies are totally isolated. Go figure.

I will get a pic of the babies here in a few minutes so you can see him/her. More Silkies should be hatching the rest of this week and next week. I will soon be overrun with them again.
