Kentucky people

I don't really know if they are sought after, I like the color, and would love to have some more rosettas that aren't tuxedoed. I have only one hen right now.
Rosetta is just a different color of tibetan. The tuxedos I have (my older ones) have a rosetta tux hen, a dark tibetan tux hen, and a dark tibetan tux roo.
I like them because they are pretty.

It's just like anything else, depends on what day you are trying to sell, if it's in demand or not. Just keep what you like, and don't worry about it.

People give me the same price for jumbo or normal sized birds, so it really doesn't matter. When you come get those eggs, I'll show you all the different colors. Maybe you'll decide you like them too?

sounds cool - I'd better go get to work, though. It won't take me long to clean the calf hutch, but the brooder bins are NASTY (they are empty, just didn't clean them after the last bunch of chicks

)

then I can play with swapping quails and count my quail chicks to see how many A&M, Golden, etc... I have

It does look like there are a lot of browns.
The little reddish ones are the rosettas (could be tuxedos), then there are some black looking ones that would be the dark tibetan.
Sometimes, the rosettas will have stripes like the browns, but their stripes are more red, and the 'brown' part is reddish as well. That's why I said some may be rosettas.

Does anyone know someone in my area (Adair Co.) that cuts hay?? We are in desperate need of it! The hay is so high that it is falling over, and the person that normally does it is not for some reason. I posted on bestfarmbuys, and had one hit, but they were too far away.

PLEASE HELP!!

Hey there! You ever catch that chicken... Don't think you're gonna. Read about them and it said they don't like close confinement, so if you had her in one of the coops in back she isn't gonna want to go back in...
lau.gif
But good luck anyway

Don't know about any of the rest of you, but my girls are absolutely loving this moderate weather, and the two youngest have decided they like taking naps in the front run in the sun, all stretched out. I took part of the fence down between runs yesterday so I could get the push mower in it, cause it wouldn't fit through the little bitty gate I built there last year.

heya all -

Well, got my chores done, finally. Trying to wake up, now, with a can of diet coke and a ciggie.

Shelley is EVIL, btw, folks, don't let her tell ya different. She called me up last night and talked me into a pair of black cochins. She stuck her hand right through the phone line and twisted my arm!!

Like I need another breed.
big_smile.png
I needed two more coops as it was, now I need three
lau.gif
!) Poor hubby, I haven't told him yet... maybe I'll just slip them into the groups and he won't notice.

Had to cull an A&M quail yesterday - he was mean and no matter who I put him in with he started attacking them. I had had him in the house, for awhile, because he got picked at and I had blukote on his head til he healed - guess he figured if he's on the attack no one is gonna attack him. I'll let ya all know if he tasted good
lau.gif
I've never had quail before, figured I may as well taste him and see if I like it. He's residing in the fridge for now. He was sort of small, even as quail go, but not too bad (he was younger than the age that you are supposed to butcher them at.)

The new white call duck has joined the other whites (who hang with the greys, and sometimes with Joe and DD). The other three, the BEI and the pair of snowys, are still hanging back a bit. I think they would join in, but they are afraid of the geese. Whenever the geese see them they chase them
sad.png
Gonna have to fix that somehow. The other three, however, do hang with the baby rouens, so they aren't totally alone.

I keep saying this, but once I figure out my breeder keepers, I need to stop adding in new ducks
lau.gif
The geese will probably settle down if they know the ones I have and I don't add in newbies anymore.

Cindy - yes, my chickens and ducks are digging on this weather (Lily is, too, she loves it cold
lau.gif
back up in MI she used to plow her face through the snow, she got excited every winter when it finally snowed for her
gig.gif
).

I have all of those little chicks out in the brooder coop, and I open the run door for them during the day. I was afraid it might be too cold and damp, but I leave a heat lamp on inside, so they can go in and warm up and they are doing great. They mob me when I come in every morning, wanting to go outside. I guess they aren't as fragile as we think they are. I suppose it'll probably make them stronger, too - maybe build up their immune systems so they are more tough when they go to other homes (homes that might not spoil them like I do
lau.gif
).

I have five more babies that hatched out the other day to put out there, too. I'll leave them inside for a week or so, though, until they can get around better.
Then, I have a bator full of my eggs to go into the hatcher Friday, and the bator full of Shelley's eggs that I got from her to go in shortly after that. Or is it the ones I have go in wednesday and shelley's go in friday...
lau.gif
will have to look at my calendar.

I have yet to clean those brooder bins. I spent yesterday clearing some stuff out of the hatcher room, took the bins out, but haven't cleaned them yet. I have more stuff to get out of that room, too - need the space to walk in there, and so I can get to my freezers.

Not sure what Toby is after out there, but he has been chasing something in the woods for awhile. Sounds like he either has it treed, or he is on the run after it.

I guess I'd better go check it out.
ETA - looks like somethign was tryign to dig up that baby donkey we buried - probably the neighbor's dog
sad.png
I despise that animal. If I catch him on my property I'll shoot him - I've seen what he's done to other people's farm animals.

Ok, lunch of quail and tomato....
big_smile.png

I did the quail (it was small, gonna wait til they're bigger next time).

Start to finish --- I butchered it yesterday, cut off feet and wings, then skinned and cleaned it out inside, put in a baggie (no brine or anything) and let it sit overnight.

Today I wrapped it in a piece of bacon and put it on the grill - cooked it for about 20 minutes or so (the bacon slows down the cooking time). Served it to myself with a fresh tomato with salt and pepper on it, no seasonings on the quail - just the bacon (of course, I ate the bacon too mmmmm)

It tasted like a chicken thigh
lau.gif
maybe a bit milder than dark meat chicken. Could be because it was so small, though, but it was great. Tender - much more tender than that chicken I butchered and cooked.

I'll have to get the size up before it'd be worth it to cook up a bunch of them, but I'd eat them again.

Now, this one was an A&M - supposed to be all white meat - it had white meat, but also had dark meat, so not a pure A&M obviously.

I have a pair of Jumbo Males (extras) that are about a month or 5 weeks old, gonna fatten them up and try it again with those - try to get the size bigger on my next cookout.

What this experiment has done for me is it has made me want to try my hand at some other game birds
lau.gif
chukars or some other bigger partridge bird, perhaps. I think I read that chukars get to be about 2 pounds - that wouldn't be so bad (wouldn't take as many for a meal for a few folks).

I was impressed with the size of the breast on this guy, though, small, but more breast meat than I expected. The legs looked more like frog legs
lau.gif
but tasted better. (I like frog legs, just they have that "froggy" taste to them, they have to be cooked properly).

So, I guess I'd better get to breeding those bigger quail (my current project, just starting that one...)

got me another baby cow tonight - that brings me up to three. I need to get updated pics of them all.

The new baby is a hereford!!! he is gorgeous!! His entire face is white and he looks like he might have blue eyes, but that may be just because he is a baby.

I would love a whole herd of herefords. (say that three times fast
lau.gif
)

so, now I have Mookie, Mookie2 (original, eh?) and the new one I was thinking I ought to name Opie
lau.gif
(hubby likes watching Andy Griffith).

Mookie2 needs a new name
lau.gif
I just haven't had time to think of one. He has a shield on his forehead, instead of a white stripe like Mook, does. He finally is getting frisky and moving around more. Both Mookie and Opie are a lot more active - and were from the start, Mookie2 took a full week to get himself around very well - probably why he didn't get an original name.

I also alternatively call him "pain in the butt" cause he is one of those who head butts a lot - and after eating he follows me and tries to chew on my butt as I walk away. Maybe I ought to name him "Piglet".
