heya all -
Well, got my chores done, finally. Trying to wake up, now, with a can of diet coke and a ciggie.
Shelley is EVIL, btw, folks, don't let her tell ya different. She called me up last night and talked me into a pair of black cochins. She stuck her hand right through the phone line and twisted my arm!!
Like I need another breed.
I needed two more coops as it was, now I need three
!) Poor hubby, I haven't told him yet... maybe I'll just slip them into the groups and he won't notice.
Had to cull an A&M quail yesterday - he was mean and no matter who I put him in with he started attacking them. I had had him in the house, for awhile, because he got picked at and I had blukote on his head til he healed - guess he figured if he's on the attack no one is gonna attack him. I'll let ya all know if he tasted good
I've never had quail before, figured I may as well taste him and see if I like it. He's residing in the fridge for now. He was sort of small, even as quail go, but not too bad (he was younger than the age that you are supposed to butcher them at.)
The new white call duck has joined the other whites (who hang with the greys, and sometimes with Joe and DD). The other three, the BEI and the pair of snowys, are still hanging back a bit. I think they would join in, but they are afraid of the geese. Whenever the geese see them they chase them
Gonna have to fix that somehow. The other three, however, do hang with the baby rouens, so they aren't totally alone.
I keep saying this, but once I figure out my breeder keepers, I need to stop adding in new ducks
The geese will probably settle down if they know the ones I have and I don't add in newbies anymore.
Cindy - yes, my chickens and ducks are digging on this weather (Lily is, too, she loves it cold
back up in MI she used to plow her face through the snow, she got excited every winter when it finally snowed for her
).
I have all of those little chicks out in the brooder coop, and I open the run door for them during the day. I was afraid it might be too cold and damp, but I leave a heat lamp on inside, so they can go in and warm up and they are doing great. They mob me when I come in every morning, wanting to go outside. I guess they aren't as fragile as we think they are. I suppose it'll probably make them stronger, too - maybe build up their immune systems so they are more tough when they go to other homes (homes that might not spoil them like I do
).
I have five more babies that hatched out the other day to put out there, too. I'll leave them inside for a week or so, though, until they can get around better.
Then, I have a bator full of my eggs to go into the hatcher Friday, and the bator full of Shelley's eggs that I got from her to go in shortly after that. Or is it the ones I have go in wednesday and shelley's go in friday...
will have to look at my calendar.
I have yet to clean those brooder bins. I spent yesterday clearing some stuff out of the hatcher room, took the bins out, but haven't cleaned them yet. I have more stuff to get out of that room, too - need the space to walk in there, and so I can get to my freezers.
Not sure what Toby is after out there, but he has been chasing something in the woods for awhile. Sounds like he either has it treed, or he is on the run after it.
I guess I'd better go check it out.
ETA - looks like somethign was tryign to dig up that baby donkey we buried - probably the neighbor's dog
I despise that animal. If I catch him on my property I'll shoot him - I've seen what he's done to other people's farm animals.
