I sell hatching eggs, though the majority of mine right now are mixed (free rangers). I am working on building pens for them but I don't have any austrolorps. The majority of my large fowl birds are either cochin mixes, old english game mixes, or barred rock mixes, but I have some black copper marans and black ameraucanas, if they ever start laying. I have a quad of barred rocks and also some golden lakenvelders but they are currently free ranging with everyone else. Other than those I have several different breeds of bantam, but again most of them are free ranging at this time.
Currently the only ones laying are one or two old english game bantams, a barred rock, and some ducks. If anyone else is laying I can't find their nests. I also have button and coturnix quail; the coturnix are out of season and won't start laying good again until probably February or March, but the buttons are kept inside. I get 3-4 eggs daily from them. Most people around here (KY) that have chickens have both roosters and hens, so if you have anyone local that sells 'eating' eggs, chances are they are fertile and hatchable. If you decide to go that route just make sure that you buy eggs that have not been washed.

I thought cortunix laid all year round. Mine are still going strong. The Bob Whites don't lay in winter. Mine stopped a few months ago. I haven't been hatching any because I have more than I can deal with now. I'm trying to get them all processed before it gets really cold. I'm just not all that crazy about having to have my hands in water when it's cold so I can clean out and refull them. Next year I know we are going to come up with a better way of doing this. I didn't do my bird math before hand.

My EE's have stopped laying already too. I sold off several birds last week so I only get 3 or 4 eggs a day now. The Buff Oprhingtons will be laying soon.

They can if you give them 14-16 hours of light a day, I don't bother with mine. I might, just haven't done it yet. I did have a couple jumbo brown hens that laid all winter last year but the eggs were not fertile.

But normally, no, if you don't give them extra light they shouldn't lay year round.

I'm down in Stanford. I couldn't tell you the breed as I have- I'm sure it's a mix. I'm new to the chicken hatching/raising thing and have some I'm expecting to hatch soon. My hen has been laying since the beginning of October - I just have the one and she's been laying one a day minus a few due to what I believe to have been a food issue. But let me know - I could meet you somewhere if I'm not planning on being in Lex when you're ready for the eggs.

I'll be in Lex next weekend... If you want me to I will collect eggs for you to hatch and bring them with me. Son has a swim meet at the pool at UK. We'll be staying in the Hyatt Place hotel. My birds are in my signature line. All the eggs will be half breeds. The roo is a Welsummer(reddish brown eggs), he has bred all the girls I have laying right now so all eggs are fertile. Half the flock is molting right now but I am getting a dark brown egg, and a lighter brown speckled egg from the BCMs almost daily, then one of my EEs has finished molting and is giving me 2-3 blue eggs a week, my two white egg layers are laying and my Cochin bantam is laying. If you want what I can get together let me know so I know to bring some with me.

My silkies are starting to lay their first eggs. I suppose they will stop soon enough since winter is just around the corner. I plan to hatch any that are fertile as long as they are laying. My EE's have stopped but the RIR and Production red are still going strong. When my EE's are "recovered" from their molt I will peobably sell them. I have several chicks from the last of the eggs they laid. I have more in the incubator but not many. I just had 4 hatch but 1 didn't make it. First one I lost in a long time due to something going wrong. I lost 2 recently but it was because the duckling trampled them. Poor babies. I think I have 12 chicks now. That may inclued the Production/Ameracauna mixes. I'd have to go out and look.

JUST had a good laugh, thought I'd share

Conversation I *just* had with my 10 year old son:

ds: Mom, so why are you so crazy about this?
me: Because,..... it is my latest interest, and I like building things, and don't you think you all would be interested in seeing the chicks hatch and stuff?
ds: Then we can get ducks.
me: well, we can't get ducks. We can have chickens in the city but not ducks.
ds: <disappointed> Why can't we have ducks? Ducks are CUTER than *chickens*!
me: ducklings...
ds: well ducklings are cuter
me: But then what are you going to do with the ducks? What do ducks do?

ds: chuck chuck BANG!! <loads gun and shoots>

Thanks son for a really good laugh!

ps. my son has never been hunting except at his uncle's house in front of the TV

I have not posted in so long, I hope I am doing this correctly. It is time for me to add new blood to my Silkie flock so I am looking for two good quality roosters that are not related to my hens. If you have some Silkie roosters and have not received birds or eggs from me in the past I would love to see them. Color is not important to me as I keep a non-standard color flock, but I am looking for good quality.

Thanks everyone,
Tom

I posted this in breeds, genetics, and showing, but I thought I'd post here too.

I'll be attending the Kentuckiana Poultry Show in Shelbyville next month and have chosen a few contenders to take with. If you are familiar with any of these breeds feel free to critique

Black OEGB cockerel (He needs dubbed still, but I noticed he has a broken feather in his tail. So he won't be going to this show, but maybe for spring?):

She isn't blue mottled, but she could be splash mottled. The seller I got her from said she had a splash and blue mottled roo in with splash and blue or blue mottled hens. So she could be splash mottled but not blue mottled. If blue mottled her back would be solid blue with white on her breast.
This is her as a baby, if she were blue mottled she would look like the cockerel next to her but with more white on her body. She is not white at all, never has been.

ETA: for comparison this is a black mottled hen and the chick in the front right of the pic is also black mottled.
PICT0225.jpg

ETA again: If she was blue mottled she would look mostly blue at this age, she is much too young to show that much mottling. The black mottled hen in the pic is almost 3 years old. The splash girl is about 8 months, not yet laying.

This is a black mottled. In this pic she was about 1 year old. Notice the mottling (or lack of) on her body.
