ahh, thanks for the heads up. I was stupid and threw the pine shavings from the run into the coop over the winter. It was fine until the last month when everything thawed. Well, at least we'll have a heck of a good garden this year.

Mud here as well. The chicks are 3' up off the ground in a large brooder coop that opens onto the communal run. They have a heat lamp and have been out for 10 days. I need to move the whole setup, coops and run, across the driveway to an area that used to have a gravel pile. The current location was fine while we needed electricity in the coop for winter (water bowls etc), but as soon as the weather is warmer they're moving!

I had never provided heat to my adult hens, but the gimpy girl Boldy obviously has an arthritic hock. The joint is swollen and hot, and has been for most of her life. The heat lamp in the dust bath really seems to help her out. She is laying better than she has in a year.

Oh I almost forgot - I ran into TSC in Richmond today to grab some feed and was APPALLED. They had just got some banties this morning and nearly half were spraddled, unable to move, eat or drink. The pens were lined with 1/2 inch hardware cloth! their little feet couldn't hope to work on wire that size. I mentioned to 2 sales staff that they better put down some paper or towel or SOMETHING or they would lose the birds. In hindsight I was also wondering if those little guys could reach the water or feed, provided in really large size and height containers.

Anyone in that area? You might want to drop in and check it out, they were absolutely adorable and responded when I dripped water on their beaks. The TSC in Winchester uses big tubs like I use, with litter, and size-appropriate water and food containers. I was a bit startled to see theRichmond TSC put chicks in displays better suited to seed potatoes. The sides of the bins were too short, perhaps only 8" high.

Hooray for you looking out for those little fuzzballs! A lot of the TSC Stores are ran by business people that don't have any farm experience & they change help/workers frequently, so they are 'stupid' about animal care,just doing what corporate tells them. Why don't you call corporate or email them about chick care? If I lived close to that store I would go there & complain. My 2 stores are Bardstown & Shelbyvile. Shelbyville's Best Manager retired last June, he was a farmer,from a current farming family & he knew everything or where to find you an answer. The new man is trying but I really don't know anything about him.

Howdy Ladies and Gents. I am looking for a trio or so of standard chickens. I am not that interested in the typical "feed store" breeds. My wife prefers something "fat and friendly" and I like unusual. I live in central Ky (green co.) and work in Hardin co. area. Let me know what ya got.

I don't really live near Richmond - we are over 45 minutes away, I was in the area to get parts at Honda. You are right, I would feel better if I followed up, but with gas prices...I sincerely think the employees intended to put down towelling. I don't know about the shallow display area, that may or may not be a problem depending on how fast the chicks sell.

Sold the turkeys this morning and also had a couple inquiries about the Partridge Rocks. Its starting off to be a good day!!
