Kill a racoon? go to jail

We had problems with coons once. Actually a family of young coons. And we set out no-kill traps. We caught 3 babies a mom and a male coon. We did not kill them bc they were so young but we took them to a broad creek with lots of fish and vegatation. It was about a mile and a half from nearby neighbor hoods and along a small rural road.

I shot 2 possums in the middle of the day in my poultry yard last winter... the local possums skirt the property because they know the dog will get them.. I tracked the possums back to my side drive next to the forest preserve... apparently they were dropped off because the tracks started at car tracks.. I have put up a camera and have several court cases pending from people releasing animals out of traps, which is illegal in my state.. people say they are releasing them in a park where they will not bother anyone and didn't see the house behind the evergreens.

The local wildlife do not like intruders and will try to run them off.. right to my place...looking for food since they don't know where to look and they are city critters that are use to eating from peoples places.I feel sorry for them, but I am not sharing chickens or my attic... The neighbor trapped 7 coons this summer in a trap going under her shed.

He may have drown a Raccoon, but I have seen a raccoon drown a grown Black&Tan coon-dog in a creek. I have herd of predators being caught, in a live trap, and drowning them, in a rain barrel before. Predators run the risk of being shot, on my farm, but my two LGD's seems to keep them away, from the farm.

Good point Ralph! I forgot raccoons are known to drown dogs. Did said raccoon go to jail?

I ask because I am having trouble coming up with what I would do as I choose not to own firearms.

I have shot animals for my cousin who doesn't have guns... but not everyone knows someone who would be willing to help.... people have put the trap in a plastic garbage bag, run a hose from the car exhaust into the bag and tie it shut so as little leakage as possible... not sure how humane that is but the pounds gas animals.

Some communities have "firearm regulations" for inside city limits. No gun shots allowed.
We live in the country and shoot those we trap or see in the act of stalking or attacking the poultry or calves.

Without firearms, you will need strong fences and tight enclosures. Know your state regulations for predatory animals. Fish and Wildlife hunting regulation magazines often carry information for killing a predatory animal "in or out of season". Carcass disposal is also regulated.

If you trap in live cages, there aren't many ways to remove a live animal from that trap without getting scratched or bitten. Releasing it somewhere else can even be dangerous because some critters will attack the hands that release it.
Disposing of the trapped animal using a bow and arrow or a spear might work.

Snap traps are useful but many consider them less humane as animals trapped by a foot or leg will knaw off the appendage to escape. Even then a trapped animal needs to be put down. Fur trappers set their traps and return later to check them.

Poisons are restricted and can be deadly to pets or livestock if not used/placed wisely. Even rat poison in a live trap for bait must be carefully wrapped to keep a "nice" animal from ingesting it....put in a can and securely wrapped with screen wire. A coon or possum will rip off the wire screen, while a well fed pet will usually not.

A bow and arrow or a spear thru the cage wires.
A club or hammer strike...need to be accurate and swift.
Detaching the head by axe or loppers.

Bag the coon in a gunny sack (or air tight box) and pipe the exhaust from a running vehicle into the sack.
