One of my brooders of ten-day-old broilers had a reel-top feed trough in it -- one of these .
Last night I was cleaning their waterers, and about to refill the feeders. I stepped outside to use the hose, all was well. Stepped back in less than a minute later, dead chick under the upturned, nearly empty reel top feeder.
As near as I can tell, he had his head in there, the other chicks, who were excited about the impending feeding, overturned the feeder, and his neck was snapped.
Just a warning to everyone about the deadly nature of this feeder design, especially when it is near empty.
I took the reel section out. And I'm going to make some nice PVC feeders out of scrap pipe.
