Kristen’s Chickens and Farming Ventures

I’ll pick DH’s brain tomorrow for you! And thanks for the link @BlueBaby... going to forward that th him as well. We just do a few different recipes for the most part. Cheddar Apple, Honey Mustard, Beer Bratwurst, Italian, Breakfast, he also does a really nice one that has diced bell peppers.

It's amazing what you can find in a google search, and I looked just to help @rjohns39 ;)

Edit: Those green egg's look like the 2 egg's that hatched a couple month's ago from some shipped egg's that I got from Washington.

Good morning Kris :frow

The owl and the eggs are awesome. And the owl will gladly make a meal out of your birds. I have a couple of feathers from a Barred Owl on my desk. I like to put a few week old chickens in with day old poults to mentor them. Turkeys are really good at suicide up until they are about 8 weeks old and the chicks help prevent that. The problem that presents is the chicks raised with the turkeys will never re-join the flock and insist on staying with the turkeys. One of my cockerel mentors took on a barred owl and lost, but when the owl decided to dine, the turkeys turned the table and ate the owl. All that was left of the owl when I found it was a few bones and feathers. The cockerel was fully in tact. Seeing the owl brought back that memory.

Morning Bob! That is quite gruesome, and yet cool at the same time. Poor cockerel. My chickens don’t mind the owls too much, they were fairly quiet even when I approached, but I did have the tarp pulled 3/4 over them for the light rain and chilly weather we’ve got. If the owl is right above them or they can see it swooping down towards them on the mice they tend to make a ruckus. But there was no alarming going on. Barney made a few quiet questioning noises at Andrew and I as we were talking about the owl after it flew further away.

gorgeous eggs, who is laying those Kris?

These eggs are from Tractor #2 and Chickie Hawk’s Daughters. They are 1/4 Marans, 1/4 wheaten Ameraucana, and 1/2 Hyline red production layers. They vary in feather color from buff to light red, some have light patterning, some have blue legs some have light feathering in their shanks, and a few have beards. They are fairly varied in appearance, which is common for a F1 hybrid. Add in that I bred Two different hybrid breeds to get them and you have quite the mix. I’m working the percentages out as they come into lay, but it looks like there’s about a 50/50 split between green layers and brown, I kept 12 pullets from this hatch and sold 4.
Nice eggs @Kris5902. Are those carrots in the background? LOL! Sorry, couldn't resist. The owl is awesome (as long as it stays outside the tractor).
Yes, those are the slowly diminishing bag of carrots in the background. I’m hoping to process a bunch more into some sauerkraut very soon. I need many more large widemouth jars! We have also been having them at almost every meal. While “we” (Mostly me) were making the 4 jars of fermenting carrots (I only have 4 pickle pipes and want to experiment with some recipes in smaller batches) my little helper who was foisted off on me as free child care on Friday made this.

It is a cat. Fun with carrots. The little one was returned about supper time, fully sugared up... “sure you can have some cola, oh your brought Halloween candies? Pure sugar? Go for it...” ;) she was literally bouncing around when I drove her back to her cabin.

FIL now wants more fill in the crawlspace. I will spare everyone the very adult language I used at this revelation after he left. I said there’s no way I can shovel or pry anything right now and he’s going to have to work it out himself with Andrew... who is working all next week, Tuesday Wednesday here, Monday Thursday there, slaughter and sausage making Friday, Market on Saturday. And we absolutely have to go to recycle this Saturday! I need to pick up more egg cartons for the Market. I’m hoping the cement just arrives and gets poured in w/o his help

Is he ever happy with the way things are done or does he just need to find something to pick at? :barnie So... why does he think you need more fill in the crawlspace? Is he just being persnickety? :he (Sorry for the rant Kris, I think his attitude just pushes all my buttons. :hmm Just as well he is a hemisphere away from me! :p)

At what point in the build does he stop having a say? Does he get to choose the indoor paint colours? (Please say no! :fl)

I'm with Ribh. Bring on that pour! Preferably while FIL is busy "hleping" someone else!

Still no concrete yet, the concrete guy’s birthday was today, so fishing and drinking were his weekend priorities! I’m guessing that tomorrow is also out, on account of the drinking and it being Sunday and all ;) soon though, it will happen before we freeze :fl

So I thought I would share this with everyone. This is why I use chicken tractors... I’m not sure if she was feeling chilly and wanting to roost in with the Littles and Barney, or if she was (more likely) looking for scavenger rodents to make a snack of, but we returned to this after driving my mom down after dinner tonight. “OMGosh!!! Is that.... oh crap it is! Stop the car I need to see if I can get a picture!”

She started out standing on the ground looking in, but hopped up on my approach. We got within about 5’ of her before she flew off to perch on the windows about 10’ from the tractor. But my phone doesn’t like taking pictures in the dark and this was the best I could do. Our most common owl the Barred. Tractor is 2’ high for perspective.

And some pretty green eggs from Chickie Hawk’s daughters:

What a gorgeous owl! Glad the chooks are safely tucked in though!

The colour of those eggs is to die for Kris! :love
