Which Rooster were you going to put over the Barnvelders? And did I miss pictures of them while I was offline? It should be an interesting cross...

As I was relocating my soon to be “freezer camp” boys back into the tractor and away from all the dangerous “big birds” and the cows this morning, I noticed a big weight difference between Chickie Hawk’s boys and Sammy’s. Chickie Hawk x Columbian Rock hen seem to be the biggest, then the red boys that take after daddy with the cheek poofs and feathered feet, then the mottled red and white boys with the single combs from Mama, then Sammy’s boys who are significantly lighter and taller. I’m still considering holding one of them back... me and my darn Rooster collection!

One thing you may be interested in... I’ve been having some “cow difficulties” in the mornings lately... open gates and they know where I live, and where the feed is. So I have been “feeding” them; ok, more they have ambushed me and trapped me in the barn while they devour the hay from there directly... anyway it’s been a rough couple mornings lately. Gus, our bull, also loves the hospital tractor for scratches, and several cows have figured out they can get their tongues under the meat tractors for “treats”... but, to the actual point, it is absolutely terrifying how much feed the mice have been stealing! How does this all correlate, you ask?

I had 8 chickens in the larger half of our hay barn, and the hay was stacked almost to the top of the ceiling in the other half about 6 rows deep. Since the owl incident there is no one in the barn. I think my free range gals and “curvy ladies” were eating far less feed than I credited them for. The cows have finally dragged out the entire bottom of the first row of hay and “how did that chicken feed get there!?!”

I truly wonder how much feed is actually buried under all that hay? So far I have uncovered at least 3/4 of a bag... a lot of which the bull and Blackie ate while I was trying vainly to remove their heads from the barn. If I kick the bales of hay near the pile of feed it slowly leaks out... mice... greedy little hoarding mice...

I just put the egg's in the incubator about a 1/2 hour ago.

Still slightly boggled that you can hatch out chicks safely in winter... I’m feeling sorry right now for my girls with the damp and cold. Especially poor Hoppy and Croppy with their hard molts.

If I lived where it was as cold as where you are at, I wouldn't be trying to do a hatch now. My incubator is in the house though, and so is my brooder.

It’s only about 46 Fahrenheit here now, but very wet. And Sammy’s girls miss their barn. No owl sightings today so far, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to be letting them back out anytime soon. I’ll take the rain over snow or ice storms anyday!
