kudos to Gordie Sternweis and Duane Urch

Duane's flock are relatively small. He doesn't set the thousands of eggs Ideal or McMurray do. His ability to fill orders is of course subject to how well they lay & how well they hatch. Conditions that are always variable.
I only ordered from Duane once but was more than pleased with the results. However, when I placed the order I told him "this is what I want-ship them when you can". I got exactly what I ordered.
There are several small operations that sell good quality stock. While they might well be considered "hatcheries" they can't reasonably be expected to provide the same sort of service as a McMurray or an Ideal.
One I know of now only sells eggs & adult stock because he got tired of dealing with demandig chick orderers.

I agree nyreds, his birds are always amazing. When we go to sales they always have a large assortment of his chicks and come fall you can always tell which birds are from his flocks. I plan on ordering from him again this spring.
I love the faverolles I have gotten from him, the welsummers from him had great egg color. Some of the other breeds I have seen from his stock that are more hard to come by meet the standard. An example were the rose comb mottled anconas. The neighbor got a few and they look great.

One odd bird I have seen from his stock was a buff orpington. The person ordered buff wyandottes and got all she ordered but she also had one chick with a single comb. As the bird matured it was a female but it had white legs. Once it got older she noticed the overall type and all and it turns out its a buff orpington. I have looked at his breed list and didnt see buff orps. Could it be that he has a few and tossed one in or what?
