Dh was a mechanic and before any of our children could get their license they knew not only how to change a tire but how to change the oil, coolant and lots of other things. I believe in doing it myself, my Dh was in the military and gone alot so if had to be done I needed to know how to take care of it. I'm proud of the fact that I can change a tire faster than most guys

I made my dad show me how when I was 14 and started to drive but I don't know that I could do it now where to put the stupid jack is a quandry (sp) to me and then I don't think I could get the lug nuts off now. Cell phone and AAA except out here in nowhere land you have to wait a while.
I usually try to look at my tires before going somewhere and also now my van has a low tire indicator which helps all those lovely pieces of metal on the dirt roads are such a joy:barnie

I change flat tires a LOT, i got 6 last year alone! Once I realized I had a flat when I was at a rest area, and pulled over to an empty part of the lot, so as to not get run over, and unpacked the back of my car to get at the spare (had just left my mom's house, and she's a shopper!), and started changing the tire... there was a 40ish guy leaning on his car, right next to me, smoking a cigarette... he watched, intently, until I was tightening the lug nuts on the new tire, and then said "hey, you need a hand?" I was SO annoyed! Just sit there gawking until I'm practically done? I coolly told him that 'thanks anyway, I've pretty much got it under control by now.' I really believe that able bodied men should ask if they can help from the get go... though I would certainly decline anyway, since I am fully capable, but it's just polite to offer!

I know how and can and have but would not turn down help. It is funny to see this post as my 17 year old daughter just recently had a flat and had to teach her boyfriend how to do it__he had no idea.

I am a firm believer that in order to drive, basics to know are fluid checks (oil, coolant, transmission) and how to change a tire as well as check tire pressure and how to jump start a car. My daughter knows all these things and it is hilarious to me how many boys she has had to show this at school.

I generally have to hop up and down on the tire iron while holding onto the top of my car...

I didn't try that.

I was soooo disappointed when I tried to change my tire. Couldn't break the nuts free. Had it all jacked up perfectly and everything. A very nice man stopped and even he had to really struggle to get them loosened. And then he stuck around to tighten them back after I changed the tire.

I answered for my wife.

She does know how, but we have AAA.
I INSIST that she NEVER try to change a tire on the freeway. That's what we pay AAA for!!!. Too many stupid people on california freeways. A person can get killed in the divider or the shoulder.
