Lame Duck Question..

I'm quite sure they can. Maybe not as likely because of swimming.. But I think I remember betty saying she didn't see any maggots. .
But then again that could also be what the chickens were picking at.

There were no maggots, there's no open sores its just scabs around the vent. And a few feathers had been ripped out. Today everything is dry there is no signs of infection. The swelling is down today which is a good sign.

Her leg issue has been going on for three weeks! And if the vent issue is related to her leg then...
I couldn't find anything about a sling from WVduckchick, could you say that again, please.

Oh. . perhaps I got my threads mixed up lol.
You can make a sling from an old towel or sheet of some kind. You'll need a tote or something to attach the sides to by using binder clips or drill a hole and zip tie or something to make the sling. Then cut holes for her legs to drop into. . and a poop hole and this way she can't put pressure on her legs. IF you can get her to stay in it I guess..

What color should a ducks poo be? I noticed one of my other ducks is missing some tail feathers and has what looks to be black poo on her vent... I will have to take a look this evening when they go into roost.

What about worms, could they have worms? I assume they can get worms since they eat of the ground.

Yes they can get worms @casportpony is poop inspector and also very knowledgeable about worming.

I let Duck Duck spend some time with the others this morning while I observed and low and behold one of the other ducks was pulling out her feathers! Since DD is injured she couldn't get away even though she was trying, and the other duck would bury her beak into DD and come out with a beak full of feathers! One-WHAT THE HECK! I had been blaming the chickens. So question is why would the other Duck be ripping feathers out of her sisters? It's not just DD one of the others has feathers missing.

I put DD in a safe place but where she could still see and/or hear the others, hopefully she's not as lonely that way. Last night I put the other Duck with missing feathers in with her.

Any thoughts?

Well. .just thoughts. . but sometimes when one shows weakness the others pick on them. That's why often times we don't know they are sick or hurt until it's too late.
They hide their weakness to avoid making themselves a target.
Separating them is about all you can do. . but also expect some squabbling when reintroduced as well.
Seeing but not touching is a good idea.
How is her vent now?

How is her vent now?

Her vent is still visible but it is healing. I am keeping her and one other Duck (she has missing feathers as well) in a small winterized coop in the run. I have chicken wire over the door so they can look out and the others can see and hear them. I'm thinking they will need to stay in there until their feathers return, right?

I was going to build a separate pen for the ducks but now that I know it is a duck that is causing the issue, I'm at a loss!
