Lame leg after baytril

Thank you for the detailed info! I'm hoping that they are just sore and holding the leg up and walking on the top of the foot to reduce the strain on the thigh...which is where the injection site was. My vet is not a chicken expert in any fashion. I will continue to give orally as they have improved drastically and it's obvious it works.

I sure hope there is no permanent damage. I feel really bad :( I'll keep watch for any sign of necrotic tissue. Should I make a splint or anything to make the foot straighten out? They are in a brooder box with a heat lamp also.

I appreciate the help. I really try to care for my guys as best as I can.
I think the pain could just be from the injections and it should resolve on it's own in a few days. Oral dosing of Baytril can cause vomiting and SC shots are not as easy with birds, so that might be why your vet told you to give the shots IM.

An avian vet mixed up what I gave my chickens. Still, she did not know chickens, but she knows birds generally -- she gave me baytril in water that she would mix for say a parrot.
Some people do it like that, but if you have a very sick bird it's probably not drinking normally... add nasty medicine and they're probably going to drink even less. IMNSHO, liquid Baytril should be given orally or by injection based on weight.

FYI, my vets are avian vets, too... not sure why they your vet didn't give you Baytril for oral dosing. Maybe because you were treating more than one and the vet didn't think you could weigh each one and figure out the different doses for them? I'm really anal/OCD about weighing and my vet knows this, so she tells me in mg/kg how much to give and trusts that I can do the math.

To help with the healing of the muscles, ligaments, whatever...get some Super B Complex vitamins and add to their water after the course. You can do a half dose now but no more than that . Dosing is 1/2 Super B Complex pill to 1 gal. of water. After done with the meds. give a good probiotic and a whole Super B in 1 gal. of water. This will help with any injury healing itself so the damage won't be permanent. The Super B Complex has a high dose of the B vitamins needed to regenerate tissue as well as vitamin C which also aids in this. If using ACV normally in their water, stop that while giving the Baytril and after with the probiotic and B. A week should do the trick with these and you can go back to using the ACV if you normally do afterwards.

Thank you for the suggestion! I got a bottle of B complex and am going to give it a try! I really hope it works, the poor things are still walking on the tops of their feet :(

I hate to say it, but it's possible they have Marek's.

Hey no worries! I never gave an age so you couldn't have known. I appreciate any input anyways!

Could you do some pics just to be safe? I don't think it's Marek's either, but there have been cases of it showing up early in life. As early as 3-4 weeks of age.
