lamp type

I use the clamp, but I also have rope tied to the light and that's tied to something higher incase the clamp ever gives.

I use a 125 watt, works great for us.

I have my 6 day old chicks in a large Sterlite storage tote in the upstairs bathroom (unheated). I've found that I only need a the 60-75 watt red heat bulb (the type sold for reptile heat) in the brooder fixture hanging above the box. I have a hook screwed into the wood ceiling and the fixture attached to a small chain (the type for hanging planters) so there is NO chance the light fixture will fall into the brooder. This way I can adjust the fixture up or down as needed to control the temperature.
I also have a brooder in the storage building outside (no heat) that is made from an old chest freezer with the lid replaced with a wooden frame with hardware cloth attached. Out there I do sometimes need the 250 watt red brooder bulb--depending on the temp in the building. It all depends on the room temp. Be safe with the fixture whatever size bulb you use.

cool ok. i just got a 100W reptile heater and i'm letting it heat up now and i'll see how it works out. I can also fill in half the tank with towels to take up space since its big for 2 chicks

Remember that the waterer and feeder should be away from the lamp...and even with two chicks, you'll want space available for THEM to get away from the lamp (and to run, jump, and play within a few days). So don't block away too much of the tank.
