Landrace/adaptive breeding discussion

So…I lost a chicken today. In a slightly unexpected way. My husband ran her over with his truck. We always go slow and the chickens always move. They have managed to learn not to go in the actual road but somehow one of my Buckeyes decided she was not going to move and got smooshed. I thought he was joking when he told me but then I looked out the window and saw a dead chicken surrounded by her friends..who were eating her entrails 🤮 That’s one predator I didn’t count on. Fortunately I have one of her eggs in the incubator so her stupidity can live on.
I guess I don't have to ask how the flock is handled the loss.
But I am sorry 🫂

They're rather like cats that way. "I intended to do that." "I moved because I wanted to, not because not moving would be stupid." And the final, "I'm not moving, and you can't make me."
I think she is the chicken that liked to hang out at the back door so it’s probably the latter. I’m just glad her egg was most likely fertilized by my NN/jungle fowl rooster because if her sprog is as people-dependent as she was it won’t do well here. Last picture of poor dumb chicken

Maybe she was suicidal because she was denied the opportunity to be a house chicken.

I just brought the week old chicks in. They did just fine the past week, but it's supposed to freeze hard tonight. With no broody, I don't want to risk it.

One of the Kraienkoppe has gone broody, and I'll give her the new chicks from the incubator when they hatch.

Her timing was off by a week.
