Langshan Thread!!!

Pics
Hello, I will have to take a photo of their coop and run and post it. The run is dirt pack and their house is a wooden box that we built that is about 3 feet by 3 feet. There is one roost in the coop and the hen uses that and the roo sleeps sitting down on the floor.

ok...so this is a photo of their run...pardon the other chicken...it used to be his run but now he is in a different coop. It has that small square chicken wire around the yard.

I'm betting the male was breeding the female in the pen and that was what was shredding his tail. It's also possible that he was catching his tail on something in the coop.

On a side note...I took the leap. I ordered some Langshan bantam eggs. Blue and splashes. I ordered them and paid on Monday...received them this morning! They are in the incubator! Good wishes on these! Also, this October I'll be getting a couple of trios. I'm really excited about these and can't wait to get my hands on them!

i recently joined the langshan club w/25 blue baby chickens. ive raised many different breeds and have noticed differences. they chicks make a different chirping sound than any breed ive ever heard, so far, they are doing ok. the baby chicks were already bigger than ny week old la flech chicks. anyway, im looking forward to raising them.

Well, I am finding that Langshans are not doing well in Missouri Weather with this heat and humidity. Out of the 3 Langshan hens that are turning a year old, 2 of them have died apparently from the heat. Unless my rooster is being too rough on them. (?) I have not lost any bantams, just a jersey giant cockerel, and my two Langshan hens. My 3 year old barred rock who doesn't lay anymore is doing fine, as is my oldest d'uccle hen 2 1/2 yrs. I have not lost any of my speckled sussex pullets who were hatched this spring. Is it just a breed thing? They were from Ideal Hatchery. The ones that I'd sold a few months ago are doing fine, as they are lucky hens who get to stay in the air conditioning when it's too hot outside by their owner who takes excellent care of them. With me working 40 hrs a week I don't have time to pamper my poultry anymore, with the 45 minute commute each way. I guess I'll keep a watch on my flock and hope it was just a breed specific thing. Has anyone else had a similar experience with Langshans and severe heat/humidity?

I'm sorry about your birds! My birds were in OK for the past 5 or 6 years. Mine do have shade to go into, but I never lost a Langshan to the heat. Marans, and a Sussex but not a Langshan. In OK I didn't pamper them either. Unfortunately I wasnt able to be as hands-on as I like but instead of a "breed thing" I wonder if it's a "line thing" maybe in this particular breed the hatchery birds are less hardy? I don't know, ive never had the production birds?
