Langshan Thread!!!

Pics
Congrats MrHeinz!!!!

More pics please!!!

ccshamb, It really depends.

Early on in the my birds laying cycles, the eggs are darker. The whites have a purplish tinge to them. As they get later in the cycle, the eggs lighten.

The bantams? I don't know...I haven't had enough eggs! haha!

My one bantam Langshan is laying a light egg every other day.

My LF Black Langshan came home today. They are beautiful. Then, to top things off, Cindy sent 2 more pullets and 3 more cockerels that were hatched in July.

I'm hoping to get pictures in the next few days.

CONGRATS!!!!!!

Welcome to the bantam portion too!!! Wish I had a different black male...mine is just evil. He screeches at the slightest thing. When I get some black chicks from him...he is going to taste SO good!

I like your male! Your female looks like she just doesn't like to be photographed!

On your largefowl black male, LOVE the feathering on the legs. Are there feathers on the middle toe? I would definitely watch out for his low angle on his tail. The females may help with offspring, but if you can find one with a higher tail angle, I wouldn't hesitate to put him over your female!

That female next to the feeder, when she stands, I bet has a really good U-shape. She's gonna be a looker! How is the head width on them? How old did you say they were?

I'll try to get better pictures this weekend. The LF hatched March and April. The older pullet laid her first egg today. When they are actually standing at attention I think their tail angle is pretty good. I'll check the toe feathering.

The bantams were Feb-March hatches with the exception of the Hortsman Ness pullet. She was a Dec hatch.

Thanks,
Jim

Both of the LF pullets have minimal feathering on the middle toe. The do have some on the webbing. The cockerel has a little on his webbing but none on the middle toe.

Ok. Checked them all out. The Horstman Ness bantams do have feathered 2nd toes.
The July hatched LF have 2 cockerals and a pullet with 2nd feathered toes. So in reality I could have 4 pairs this spring to do single matings with for my LF. I know with Speckled Sussex single matings are used. Are they used for Langshans that often too? Is the feathered 2nd toe a dominant or recessive trait?
Thanks,
Jim

cubakid, you're right. It's a common issue with the bantams apparently. Every show I've been to has bantams with shorter legs than what I'd like to see.

But, we all have to start somewhere.

mrheinz, this is what I have been doing:

Mind you, I've only had the largefowl up until 2 months ago.

My males tend to have the issue of having too few leg feathers, or at least, more sparse feathering. I choose females that have heavier leg feathering, I even have a few breeder birds (ONLY) that I use to keep up the heavier leg feathering. I then choose adults form this breeding that do not have any feathers on their middle toes. USUALLY, as chicks, these birds have fluff on their middle toes. As they age, the feathering on the outer toes and shank becomes heavier and the middle toes do not have any feathering. If they ever get to the point of Cochin heavy..might want to reassess your breeding.

OR, you could purchase a male that has sparser leg feathering than what your male now has. Breed him to the females that have the middletoe feathering.
