Langshan Thread!!!

That's good to know! My chicks are out for recess right now. I'm going to go check out their wing bows. I have quite a few that hatched from eggs that you sent to Cheryl, Mikaela. I do have a question for you. We have 6 black cockerels that are 6 weeks old and very aggressive. We have 2 white cockerels who are also more aggressive than the blue and splash cockerels. Have you found this to be true with your birds?

Definte "aggressive". My birds are usually a bunch of lazy lumps until breeding age. Then they are lazy breeding lumps. I have a cockerel right now (pictures coming in a few minutes) that is just a baby doll. LOVE him.

Thanks for your guesses on my Chicks! Your'e one of the ones on here whom I belaeve knows what thay are talking about, So your opinitons is Ways high on my scale.
Not to say that I think your never wrong! I know you are human like every one else & their for can make misstakes.

No offence meant to any others! Every ones opintion has value, it's just some have more.

NOOO! Jewel you can Not be a boy

Thank you, that is very kind of you. We all have to learn one way or another. I was fortunate to have a mentor that truly cared that I knew and understood what I was looking for in a bird. How? Trial and error! Without his guidance, I doubt I would be anywhere near I am now. Just wish I had listened to him sooner than trying to make it my own way!

I think we all understand what you mean about the guesses/advice. I doubt anyone will take offense to your statement, after all, we cannot see faces or hear a tone of voice! No worries! We are all fairly laid back in this thread!

The blacks have pecked and drawn blood on the wing bows of one of the black cockerels and one of the blue cockerels. I separated the blacks from the other colors but they went for one of their own when the blue wasn't available. I just get them both healed up and when I put them back in with the group in the large pen, they go for them again. I've been using rooster booster pick no more lotion on them but it's not making a difference. One time after pulling a hurt cockerel out of the pen, they all looked at me and 5 out of the 6 black cockerels had bloody beaks. They looked like black mini velociraptors! The white cockerels peck on the others but haven't drawn blood. The blues and splashes are sweethearts!

Please tell me that is not my line doing that.

I've never had birds mutilate each other. Even grown birds with youngsters?

One thing you can do, Put Vaseline on the injured male's wing bows. On the males that are doing the offense, BARELY clip the tip of the beak. this will ruin the "point" on the beak that is causing the issues. The only mutilation I have had was when I had put some D'Uccle bantams in the pens with my Langshans. Pecked out each and every leg feather my 6 week old birds had. The D'Uccles were the same age.

Now I'm afraid its my line. Cheryl got eggs from me too. I haven't had any problems besides over breeding the girls.

Dang!

Is there any way you can separate the lines? That may help with the whole aggressive issue. If they are all aggressive, maybe they will sort out their aggressiveness themselves?

Debi are they big enough that we can put peepers on them?

Glad to give a smile & I meant every Word! My Parents trained me to speak my mind & to be ready to clarify & explain, when thing came out wrong or could be misconstrued.

Very True "We all have to learn one way or another." & through trial & error. I'm still going through the learning process as you can see

I can grasp what your saying on the mentor things & sympathize with you, wish I could say understand instead of grasp;but I've not been in that boat, so I don't know that understand would be the best word to use in this case.

I'm Glad you all understand. I hope that your right about people taking offense; But I've seen stranger things happen on BYC & like you said "after all, we cannot see faces or hear a tone of voice!" so it could be just as easy for someone to misunderstand what we say or do or mean by what we say. I have seen someone crack a joke or say something in sarcasm & someone took it too seriously or too personally, that's why I try to be so careful on how & what I say, Always have as many faces/emoticons as necessary & try to always think of not just the person I'm writing to,but also any others who might see what I say.

Actually, your line is the one getting picked on. I guess that they are just too sweet & mellow and don't fight back. The juvenile delinquents pecked a little pullet from your line today. They pecked her back and made her bleed. Poor baby!

So, instead of the pick no more, I should put Vaseline on them? Won't the red show through and the bullies will keep pecking on it? I have the injured ones separated in a semi-private brooder but when they all go out for recess in the big outdoor pen, I have them all together. Maybe I need to not put the boys out there or have them out there at different times.

I've never used peepers so I don't know. Do they come in different sizes? I think that I'm just going to keep the black boys separate from everyone else. The 2 white cockerels are bossy but haven't drawn blood or pulled out feathers.
