Langshan Thread!!!

Pics
So sorry to hear about the loss of your babies! Our young dog killed our blue Langhsan broody hen in May. She was my favorite chicken and it was so sad. We now have some Langshan juvies but I still miss Bijou.

Hello,

One of our surrogate Silkie mums threw her remaining 2 eggs out of her nest today. She had done this previously with 2 others which I checked and they were just rotten eggs. Today however one of them cheeped when I cracked it to inspect. I had no idea what to do so I helped the little critter out of the shell ( I know now that was stupid ) and tried to introduce it to the surrogate mum. She didn't want a bar of it and even pecked at the chick quite hard. Now the Langshan chick is inside in a box and it seems to be doing ok. I am hoping the other Silkie mum with 3 eggs, which should be close to hatching, will accept this orphan. I have been told maybe I can sneak it in with the others when she isn't looking. Does anyone know what the chances of this little fella surviving are and any important things I should be doing?

Ta, Dave.

Awww, how cute! How's your little one doing?

I have a question for those of you who have been breeding Langshans. If you wanted to breed BBS and were starting from scratch with your flock, what roo over hen combinations would you choose? Say you have 2 breeding pens with 1 roo in each over 3 or 4 hens.

agua, how is your chick doing? Sorry, I was prepping for a show. I didn't have much time to get online! Yes, you can usually put chicks in with a "bunch" and the hen won't know the difference. I have unusually calm broodies. I put a chick in with them and they will accept it.

PetRock, what colors and what sexes do you have currently. When you say "scratch" do you mean just blacks, just blues, just splashes?

I ALWAYS prefer the black over splashes. That way, you have nice dark babies. I just hatched some and am really impressed with the depth of blue on them thus far. I also like to have pure blacks, pure splashes and a pen of pure blues.

ALWAYS mark the blacks that come from the blue pens. Why? Because it can weaken the black color if you use them in your "true" black pens. Only use these birds if they have excellent type, combs and leg feathering for your blue pens. I would use the blue and splashes interchangeably in pens. If you start noticing the color washing out, then put a "TRUE" black in to darken the color up again.

You trying to keep them??? :D

I wanted to add a few photos from the show this past weekend. I was really proud of my birds and how they did in the show! Especially since this was the first time showing for several of them!

By far, my most proud accomplishment:
Reserve of Variety and 1st place pullet:

White Cockerel 2nd place! I definitely think this is a female line.:

Blue Cock 1st and BOV:

Blue LF Pullet, BOV and 1st:

My black pullet took 4th, but I couldn't get a good picture of her. She was flipping out....gotta love the young birds! lol!
