Laree's "I CAN'T STOP MYSELF FROM HATCHING!!!" Hatch-a-long

Why wouldn't I have chickens?

I eat eggs, I love the entertainment, they eat the tons of bugs I have in my yard, make lots of poop for my gardens and always lower my blood pressure after a bad day of work. I love taking care of them. I love that no matter where I sit down outside, Tonya Harding Chicken will find me and jump in my lap, snuggle down and want to be petted. I love that Hoppy follows me everywhere, even all the way down my long driveway to get the mail and then back to the house.

Now, I have contemplated eating some roosters that I can't sell, but they always sell on D-Day for some reason.

I don't eat grocery store meat because I don't agree with the way it's raised. I would have little ethical issues with eating my own happy and well treated birds but I haven't wanted to or needed to.

Sorry to hear about your chick. It is so hard when the little ones loose the battle. I too lost a chick last week. Yolk came back out and there was nothing I could do but make it comfortable.

I've had really bad luck the past 2 weeks. I had 2 mommas that had 1 chick each, both lost their chicks. Then today earlier one of the broodies chicks hatched but it was all nasty bloody and dead when I saw it in her nest. Then I had to put down wry necked chick today. At least it hasn't rained yet today (we've had about 2 weeks of rain, today is the only day predicted without rain in the next 10 days).

To be honest, in this crazy thing that is my life, the only thing that keeps me sane are my animals. Chickens, MEAT goats, dogs, cats. I don't eat my goats or chickens. I don't eat my goat nor have I sold them to anyone for a meal. I haven't and never will eat my chickens.

First bator attempt...10 on lockdown this morning, but am not sure with candling....I know 4 are really good or should be....In AZ so after filling the trays and knowing my hygrometer is about 5 degrees off, I juryjacked a method to get water in with no tubing in sight, took apart a bic pen for a straw to direct the water in the bottom with a marinade injector....so proud of me, but keep checking the little guys, temp and humidity....so on pins and needles....
