Large bulging area under vent in 1 1/2 year old Barred Rock

Her crop should be flat in the morning if she doesn't eat any more tonight she'll be digesting her food in her crop through the night, Do you give your chickens ACV in their water? Does she have grit in her with her, grit is very important thats how they grind their food in their crop. Maybe just continue with the warm baths, and if you have epsom salts put about 1cup in the water sure can't hurt. When you feel of her abdomen [bulge] does it feel hot like infection? And after she has her bath don't forget the nice fluffy white robe and slippers before the cocktails

I am sure she is enjoying all the attention.

Hi Speckled Hen,
All my 1 1/2 year old hens finished their molt by around Thanksgiving. I was thinking at first her problem may be related to resuming egg production. Most of my flock with the exception of some Black Australorps are back in the nesting boxes and doing well. Keeping her comfortable. Many thanks!

:/When my chickens molted, they looked like that in the back too.... They did just fine, never lost a chicken. They just look that way.

Did look funny, I hope yourbirds turn out that way too

Hi!

While molting my birds did have some patchy spots but no bare, huge bulging areas. When I first discovered her she was standing in a nesting box with her head down and seemed distressed. The bulge was obvious.

To answer other questions what is ACV. Their water gets changed every 3 days. Grit is supplied in the winter in the form of sand placed into a giant plastic mortar mixing box in the middle of the coop.

What am I missing?

Apple Cider Vinegar is ACV,I don't think your missing anything lrgarden we're just trying to cover every base. Did you happen to feel if the bulge is hot to the touch like maybe infection, because it looks red. I have to go but hopefully someone else will be able to help you, Please keep us updated.... I am sorry I haven't been able to help you more.

So lets talk temp. Does her bum (bulge) feel... Hot, cool, normal, very hot, cold, body temp, room temp. this is gonna sound strange but you said that you checked her for an egg correct? Did her vent (or what you felt of it through the gloves)feel at... body temp, warm, hot,or very hot? Giving us this info would greatly improve our chances of helping you and your bird.

Hello,
I just checked the temp and it does appear slightly warmer than the temp of her skin under the wing, which I am assuming is a more normal surface temp. Inside the vent this aft. with my gloved hand could not really tell as her bum was under the warm water plus the glove does
shield my skin.

I am starting to think infection too. Yesterday my local large farm supply had no poultry medications whatsoever, so would you think the
next step is tomorrow AM, a pet supply store that sells pet birds might have antibiotics?

Many many thanks. You are all the best.

Honestly, it looks like someone has been pickin at her butt or she has been picking her own feathers. If that is not that case then I am stumped.
