Large bulging area under vent in 1 1/2 year old Barred Rock

What a relief I was beginning to think we would lose her and we would never know why. Keep up those soaks and let us know how she is doing. I know your relieved to see improvement. Epsom salts is great stuff.

Really relieved to hear that she is doing better! Sounds like if she is eating well that she will make it. Keep us posted!!!

Hi Everyone, yesterday I let her spend the day with the flock. I brought her in at 9, gave her a soak and kept her in her warm cozy cage. This morning she had knocked over her water and food before I awoke, and I put her back out with her friends before work.
I had a very bad day personally with news of my 87 year old father's imminent passing so did not give her extra personal attention after work thru the evening however did check on her. Her bum is still a little reddened but is not bulging or swollen badly. She will spend the night in the coop and I will check on her before work and hopefully get a soak in later in the day. I will have to dry her off with a hairdryer if so because I don't want her to get a chill.
She is not acting as though she wants to lay, not squatting for me when I walk in the coop so I think that is good.....Her appetite has been great, eating her pellets, lettuce and I did put a big cabbage head in the run for them all to work on.

Thanks everyone.

Lori

i have a hen with the exact same problem. same age but she is a red shaver & she is happy enough, eating, drinking she isnt as energetic some days as the others when free ranging ( doesnt venture as far ). she has been like this for a few weeks now.
i noticed yesterday that she has bald spots on her chest but her other feathers are concealing it, also has feathers missing on her back, so im thinking shes molting maybe?
her whole underside is almost completely bald.

How old is your hen Raven? if shes missing feathers on her under side she might be wanting to brood, they will pluck their own feathers for the nest. the ones missing on her back could be rooster damage or molt, ....................

lrgarden, I am sorry to hear about you Father that is a tough time. Hopefully your girl is on the mend and at least that worry will be off your shoulders. Blessing sent your way.

she is in her 2nd yr of lay. no signs of her sitting so far she does sit in the nest like she is laying an egg but i dont actually know if she lays anything.
out of all our chickens its hard to tell who lays what, except the orpys

If you really want to find out if she's laying or if thats the problem you might have to move her someplace where you can actually see for yourself, like a large dog crate made up for her shavings and water and food and give her a day or so to get use to the place and just wait it out she might lay right off. Does she look swollen in her vent or actually red?
