Large Fowl Cochin Thread

Looks like you have a pen of cockerels. Matt is correct, cochins do not have the rapid feathering gene so they feather very slowly with the males being dreadfully slow in some strains and varieties. If you want chicks that will be naked until they are nearly 4 months old try partridge cochins, those cockerels just won't feather. The shape of the body is also a dead giveaway, the oblong shape with the large abdomen is very indicative of a male bird.

Dang. Well at least I know they don't have some weird disease or something. It's just so weird lookin in the brooders and seeing them mixed in with all the other feathered chicks. Thanks for answering my rookie questions guys.

Edit: I just realized that could read as if I was disappointed that they were actually Cochins. Didn't mean it to come off that way. I've always had a soft spot or the entire Asiatic class (just never had the chance for Cochins), just disappointed they're all cockerels.

Remember the feather sexing only works on breeds that express the rapid feathering gene. Commercial poultry producers breed their birds to express this gene and it is commonly known in New Hampshires and thus New Hamp blood is used to get this gene into commercial flocks. Typically large cochins within a few weeks can be sexed by body shape and feathering, males are very slow feathering and have longer larger bodies with large abdomens.

I would like some thoughts on wether or not you think these are Pullets or Cockerels. They are all 1 and a half months old. All LF Cochins. All of the ones that I think are Pullets have many a lot of feathers. The ones I think are Cockerels are very broad and bare. What do you all think? Sorry for all of the photos!

Black Cochin #1, I think it is a Pullet.

Black Cochin #2, I think this one is also a Pullet. Didn't get a shot of her feet.

Blue Cochin #1, this one is larger and taller than all of the other ones, but I think it is a Pullet.

Blue Cochin #2, Pullet?

Golden Laced Cochin, Cockerel?

Partridge Cochin, Cockerel?

Red Cochin, I think it is a Cockerel.

White Cochin, Pullet?

Black #2, Blue #1, and Red are 100% cockerels. No doupt on those 3.

Partridge looks rooish, but not 100% sure. Black #1 and White are questionable. Blue #2 and Golden Laced look mostly like pullets.
