Large Fowl Cochin Thread

Pics
I'm located in Florida, I'm looking for LF blue or blue splash cochins. Preferably a younger trio that are either show quality or some show/show breeder quality.
Any recommendations of who to go to for them? I don't mind receiving shipped birds, I just want to start with nice quality.

You should start seeing the lacing in the second molt they go through as chicks. I like for the chicks to be fairly dark in their first feathering, this is normally a pretty good indicator of intensity of color but not of lacing. My chicks are light blue this year so I'm not sure how they will turn out, the hen was very nicely laced.
How are your mottleds and blacks looking? I have some dandies in both varieties, the mottleds are molting out and turning predominately black now, which is what I expect the first year. I wish judges understood this about mottled birds and took that into consideration when judging cockerels and pullets. Probably something that needs to be included in the SOP as a reference for judges. Counting down to the Large Mottled Cochin qualifying meet in three years!!!!

Blessings to you,

Bo

My Mottled and Blacks were moved outside yesterday and wing banded (they are also toe punched) . I love how they fill my hand when I pick them up. I seems that it is mostly the females that have the mottled feathers on their chests at this age. It looks like it is about 2/3s males to 1/3 females, but it will be a couple more weeks before I can be exact. In addition to this years hatch from you, I have 16 hatched from last years trio.

I am excited at the prospect of participating in a qualifying meet. I may have to enter a few locally as AOV in the meanwhile.

It would be nice to exhibit the younger birds, but I don't know if you can make an allowance for a potential color change. They are so nice that they could be exhibited as Blacks.

If they are solid black show them as blacks the first year and then as mottleds after that. I am running over 60% pullets this year and maybe closer to 70% which is odd, normally I have about 99% cockerels to 1% pullet. I had a good number of cockerels that were heavily mottled but as they have molted into juveniles they have turned predominately black. The chicks out of the purple banded pen have a tuxedo look to them for the most part, they are black on top and white on bottom.

The little blue cockerel has good top color and may be fairly correct in his andalusian coloring, you'll know more as he molts into his juvenile feathers.

Two of my birds from Bo's eggs. Almost a year old.

I only have 2 LF Cochin chicks. One is a black pullet smooth feather and the other is a white frizzled cockerel

I don't have pictures of the 2 together only of the Black Pullet. Heres the only picture I have of her when she was younger. She is now the head of the pecking order along with my other Cochin. I love Mrs. Bigfoot & Frizzy Mickey very much!!!

The best GLCs I have been able to find have been from Tom Roebuck and Roland Doerr. I have seen nothing else available that is even close to the same quality, and I hatched a bunch last year from a number of sources. They were all small, poorly laced and of poor type. Add the vulture hocks in and I didn't keep a single one for breeding. My trio from Mr. Doerr is decent, but still needs improvement.

Your birds and gorgeous! (And Hoosiers, to boot!

) Do you ever sell chicks or hatching eggs? I'm looking for both Cochins and some SL Wyandottes, and you're about the closest person I've found to me with both. No worries if you're not selling, but I thought I'd ask.

Definitely putting mottled on my wish list. Also, I have see a couple of different things being referred to as Lemon blue. I do have a buff/ blue cross - is that what is referred to as lemon blue?

No, the lemon blue is derived from a cross of brown red X silver blue if I remember correctly. The old english and modern game breeders can correct me if I am wrong. Your little cross bred bird looks very nice though, it will be an eye catcher to anyone visiting your farm. Crossbreds are normally very pretty with their color combinations but can be used only for eggs and yard ornaments unless you have a plan behind the cross you are making.

Bo

The lemon Blue is actually a Brown red crossed over a blue hen, the blue will dilute the red hackle, saddle, and breast lacing to a lemon color. You can successfully mate Lemon Blue to Lemon Blue but works better to use Lemon Blue over Brown Red.

Bo,
You mentioned the Columbian in standards? Is there someone else working on this? We started the process but will take another 3-4 generations to get there. If you don't mind you know someone working that direction could you ask them to contact us?
