Large Fowl Cochin Thread

Are you looking for show quality birds? Or just something different to add in your flock

I bought mine from Ideal (they are currently not available until 2018). I bought Blue, self blue, silver and gold laced, partridge and barred.
Grading them, the self blue, blue and barred are the best. They have nice fluffy feet. The silver and gold laced while beautifully colored have pretty bad feet. They look more like slightly feather footed Wyandotte's to me, not a pure cochin but a mix. The partridges are beyond horrible. They have gaps in the feathering between their foot and thigh area. It's filled in some as they have got older (about 4 months old now) but it's still going to never be as full as a good quality cochin. I still plan to add red and buff at some point next year maybe. And in the meanwhile I'll part with one of each of my colors that are what I consider to be the worst of the 2 of each. Except the blues and self blues, and barred they are very nice. As long as you do not expect high quality chickens I think any hatchery would be ok to get cochins from.

But I also want one thing close to standard not enough to to show but to have the resemblance
If you want them to be close to the SOP you are going to have to buy from a breeder. If you are just looking for a semi decent cushion adn feathered feet hatcheries are the way to go

My county fair was last week. I took my 3 Cochins

Took reserve Pullet but could not be recognized due to the fact that my county has a rule that the same exhibitor cannot get reserve and Grand

The bird that won grand was a black Australorp. Very nice bird in the body but i would've liked a better comb, leg and beak color, along with it having cleaner feet and being free of parasites
