Large Fowl Cochin Thread

Pics
Hi! Just a quick question for you experts. I have 4 straight run large fowl blue cochins. They are almost 5 weeks old. I am trying to determine if they are male or female. Does the slow feathering = roo apply here? I have one that has feathered out MUCH faster than the rest; in fact she/he is pretty much fully feathered. The other 3 are only about half way feathered. Am I assuming correctly that she is the only female?

Thanks!

I am not an expert...however we have mostly cochins...our older ones are almost 3 months old....the feathering thing DEFINITELY applied to all of them! Based on feathering at 4-5 weeks old, we suspected that 2 out of 9 were hens (boohoo). We were 100% accurate with these cochins...and we have 2 hens! We have a new group of 9 cochins that are the same age as yours.....we are positive based on feathering that 6 are hens (YEAH), 2 are roosters and one of them we are up in the air about....mostly feathered in like the hens...but comb is a little suspicious. So Macaroni and Cheese (a buff cochin that my 3 yr old named) is not going anywhere until the bitter end and starts crowing (which we REALLY don't want as it is beautiful and we really want to keep!). Good Luck and on a positive note, (we had a mix of breeds all straight run) of the nine roosters we ended up with, all the ones we were able to find homes for (not a dinner plate) were the cochins!

This is not specifically a cochin question....however we have mostly cochins....LOL I posted this last night in the emergencies, illnesses section and the more I thought about it realized that unless someone has a need, it is probably not a highly visited section. So I am asking all of you....On occasion our older chicks ( almost 3 months old) will sneeze, which I have read is normal. This sneezing has been sporadic and not accompanied by any other symptoms. On the other hand, we have younger chicks (4 1/2 weeks old) in the last day or so, I have noticed them sneezing more often. On a positive not, it does not appear ( at this point anyway) to be accompanied by any other symptoms. I have read that chickens cannot really get colds that it is variations of a few respiratory diseases. Can chicks be bothered by high pollen? It has been pretty awful where we live. They are in an extra large tub at night time and a large brooder box or outside in an extra large wire dog crate in the day time. Their brooder box is on our enclosed porch, so it is cleaned often. Any thoughts....I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions.....thank you, Andrea
