I am not an expert...however we have mostly cochins...our older ones are almost 3 months old....the feathering thing DEFINITELY applied to all of them! Based on feathering at 4-5 weeks old, we suspected that 2 out of 9 were hens (boohoo). We were 100% accurate with these cochins...and we have 2 hens! We have a new group of 9 cochins that are the same age as yours.....we are positive based on feathering that 6 are hens (YEAH), 2 are roosters and one of them we are up in the air about....mostly feathered in like the hens...but comb is a little suspicious. So Macaroni and Cheese (a buff cochin that my 3 yr old named) is not going anywhere until the bitter end and starts crowing (which we REALLY don't want as it is beautiful and we really want to keep!). Good Luck and on a positive note, (we had a mix of breeds all straight run) of the nine roosters we ended up with, all the ones we were able to find homes for (not a dinner plate) were the cochins!

Thanks! That is what I suspected. I am happy with that as long as I get at least 1 hen! She is a beautiful little thing.

First off, yes, they are on pine shavings and I think that may be it. I had them outside with me most of the day today and I did not notice any excessive sneezing. Secondly, I LOVE your signature....ring master...4 kids....circus! I have a husband, 4 kids, a menagerie of animals and I sometime feel like I am a ring master with a 3 ring circus!

I"m glad it was something simple like pine shavings

I noticed that when I put chickens on pine shavings that had not been on them previously they would sneeze- outside in the dirt they would be fine.

Thanks about the signature. I"m sure you can relate- some days are worse than others and I feel like I"m completely surrounded by clowns!!

I don't have any pictures handy, but maybe I can shed some light on the matter. Vulture Hocks are hard feathers that basically come directly out of the hock of some featherlegged breeds. Most cochins have some small degree of vulture hocks in my opinion and actually some is desirable because it gives the appearance of a much fuller leg feathering. The problem occurs when you get a lot of feathers that are obviously very hard, almost like wing or tail feathers. I have never seen a judge disqualify a bird for soft feathers on the hock, but I have seen when hard, long, obvious feathers will get DQed.

Hi everyone! I just posted some pictures of my LF cochin frizzles and smooths on the other cochin thread if anyone wants to look at them... And all 16 of them are up on my thread in pics and stories.

I just put my large fowl blue cochin pullett (ten months) in a breeding pen with a rooster exactly two weeks ago, and I have collected an egg from her every day since. 14 eggs in 14 days! If only every cochin layed like that.......

I am fortunate. Most of mine do. The problem is they spend most of their time broody

When mine lay, they lay every day....then they go broody. Guess I knew that when I bought them.

We have a mixed group of chicks...a couple marans, a couple wyandottes, an olive egger, a couple of buff orpingtons, a barred rock, a barnevelder, 3 speckled sussex and 6 cochins...the cochins being our favorite breed!!! They range in age from 5 weeks to 11 weeks old. We are relying on our other girls to be our layers! LOL We wanted cochins because we LOVE their feathers and their looks and their personalities.....NOT their laying potential!!!!!! LOL
