Large Fowl Cochin Thread

You won't want to miss the 2012 Cochins International Western National Meet this year! There will be over $500 in cash awards, as well as the trophies, ribbons and some beautiful painted plates. There will be a silent auction and raffle - proceeds will help fund the Club activities. You could be the lucky one to go home with a pair of Large Silver Laced Cochins donated by Roland Doerr, or a pair of Large Black Cochins donated by Linda Tobia.

UPDATE! A trio of LF Blacks and a pair of Buff Bantams have been donated to the silent auction by Gerald Church.

So be sure and stop by the Cochin table April 21st at the Missouri State Poultry Assoication Show in Sedalia, MO.

Donations are still being accepted for prizes, the raffle and auction. For more information about the show, or to volunteer with the Club activities, please contact Bernita Miller at 660-647-2474 or [email protected] .

See you there!

Hi everyone!
I just found this thread and would like to introduce myself. A bit concern about what everyone will think about what I am doing with my LF cochins. They are actually part of my breeding program to combine LF cochins with Ameraucanas. I have had a few accidents with bantams and actually came out with birds that look like favorelles, just missing the extra toe. I love favorelles but have not had much luck raising them. I do like the colored eggs I get from my EE and ameraucanas, as well as the blue legs and pea combs. I am not trying to breed a bird to look like just like the favorelle because I am looking to add the qualities I most like in the combination I am developing.
My biggest problem right now is finding the stock to have a big enough genetic base. LF cochins here in Oklahoma are hard to come by. I have three roosters, one is a black/partridge mix, black and a splash. Hens I have 4 black, two blue and two white. I recently got some chicks but their leg feathering is not so great. I would love to find some more LF cochins eggs, chicks and adult birds. I want to make sure I have a diverse bloodline to start with.
My genetic charts are give me a headache. Have to keep redoing them. At this point I have not gotten beyond 2nd generation with the birds I have. Still working on tracking chicks to make sure they are not bred to their parents. Starting the line out clean to establish a viable stock, which is more complicated then I thought. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Anyone know a programmer who could develop a program to track genetics?

Welcome!

I'm getting read to separate my breeders (a little late, I know) and read somewhere that I should trim their fluffy butts for better fertility. True? and any suggestions on how much to trim? Thank you all in advance! I just LOVE my cochins!!!!
