Large Fowl Cochin Thread

Pics
Well, I hope not a fox because means I won't sleep tonight. The reason we think our dog is because 1st - it sure looked like her hair around hole & fencing, 2nd - none eaten, 3rd- 4 were left in the pen, 2 outside in 1/4 acre fenced off garden area where the coops/runs are (but we've always left garden gate open so dogs can scare off other critters (????) and the other two were out in the fenced backyard where the dogs stay. Very few critters get in our backyard and make it out alive.

hehe and goofy mean I really meant to post this is the Langshan thread but thanks for the condolences.

Now I'm freaking out about a fox!!!!!! I have 3 other large walk-in pens that house another 30.

Like I said - we thought ours was my dog too until he came back and killed again. They don't take there kill and eat it right away, they come back later for it and will kill everything in the chicken house. The first time I blamed my dog and then it happened again and I seen the fox do it! Poor dog ....

Hey all I am looking for more LF COCHINS - obviously want more pullets/hens but also would like a roo or two (if they have been raised together and get along). As for color, will consider any (currently I have: (2) buff (2)partridge (2) white (1) blue (1) black). Right now though I do not want chicks, preferably older than 3-4 months, even older. I do want some that are very good to excellent quality, NO HATCHERY stock.

Let's say I am in the general CHATTANOOGA, TN area, so looking more local. Might, maybe consider shipping just depends on price, quality of bird/birds etc.

Thanks

Can't answer your questions (I would like to know also) but Welcome

I am new to LF cochins myself. I have 8 (6 pullets & 2 cockerals (I think one is queationable)) they are going on 6-7 months (?) (girl we got them from just said spring) none laying and neither of what we think are the roos have crowed yet. I was almost so sure the one in question was a cockeral (way bigger than others, with larger comb, waddles etc.) but we have had them now almost 3 months and really the comb & waddles are not growing & I think the neck feathers looked more rounded than pointy. Guess more time will tell and as far as laying, with the colder weather starting in might not see any egg laying until spring ??? Funny though, my bantam cochins start crowing (well trying at least) really early, like around 2 months sometimes.

A lot can depend on your line. My line starts laying between 8 and 10 months. The pullets lay a large medium brown egg. My hens lay an extra large iight brown egg. I was surprised how well they lay. When not broody, I probably get 5 eggs per hen per week on average.

The size of the egg can vary with individual lines and birds. Most will give a large to xL egg. Eggs should be brown, but the actual shade can vary from really light to fairly dark. The easy answer is brown.

My birds start laying at 7-9 months old in warm months. That gets extended the future into winter you get with non-mature birds. Cochins are good layers. 4-5 eggs a bird per week. At least till they go broody. At that point you get no eggs, but most cochins are good setters and excellent mothers.
