Large Fowl Cochin Thread

I have 3 blue pullets I was interested in getting feedback on.
Positive and negative, I have my own ideas of the faults for each of these bird, but was curious on how accurate I was.
Please keep in mind all three of these were just pulled from the runs three days ago and bathed.
I was going to start going through and culling. I only have 20 or so to work with though...

All 3 are Spring 2012 babies

Pullet 1- Dark Blue
This is the darkest blue pullet I have, and I am wondering if this is too dark or what yalls thoughts are... Also, please look at her structure and build and tell me if she is worth going further with or I should rehome her...

Pullet 2 - Medium Blue

Pullet 3 - Light Blue

I am open to any feedback and continue to look for more blue birds (if you happen to have any for sale...hehe)

Thanks!

Hi Maddie, I am new to Cochins as of this year. I am not new to black, blue, splash genetics! If you read the SOP, the blue you read verses the blue we see most of the time are always two different things. Pullet one, her color is too dark, IMO. You can't begin to see the edging on her feathers. With that being said, I love her heart shaped body! She would also be great to breed back to a blue rooster, or splash. Hen 2 looks like she has some brass tones, sunburn or red leakage??? I love her dark head that is great, it seems like she has a good start to lacing on her neck. Just like any laced bird it takes them 2 years to reach there full "potential" for there pattern. The problem is lack of lacing, but plenty of edging................that will not change. The last one is my favorite color wise, but the top one is my favorite otherwise. I don't know if this helps you, or not, good luck!!!

Hello LF Cochin folks!

I am here to ask about cochin roos. I know that each rooster is an individual, and that there is no predicting how an individual will act, but in general, what are cochin roosters like in temperament? I have a mixed flock of 7 girls that I keep in a medium (I want to say around 250 square feet) run + large coop when I am not home/not able to watch them, and let them range for an hour or two each day unless the weather is miserable. I've had two experiences with other breeds of roosters that got overly aggressive with my hens and started hurting them, so I am a bit nervous about roosters. I know there are good ones out there, and someone local to me has too many LF cochin boys that she needs homes for.
I don't want to make a mistake for myself OR the cochin roo, so I bow to your experience. I have read that cochin roos are gentle birds to their hens, that have a low, loud crow but don't tend to crow incessantly. What is your experience?

He will be a pet and a guardian rooster, not for breeding as I have no other cochins.

I love my cochin roos, but they are still individuals...
I have one that is my gentle giant, that is super sweet to all his hens, baby-sits babies, you can put anything with him, but is literally last in the pecking order if I was to let him free range with my "mutts." He would have all of his feather plucked in 5 minutes if he was to be out of the cochin pen.
I have another cochin roo who does free range b/c I knew he was not what I wanted for breeding my cochin girls, but I am attached to him since he was my first bird. He is #1... He is bossy, in charge, loud, and any other boys will run the other direction if they see him coming... BUT he is even tempered though, and much nicer than any of my other breeds towards the free range girls and people.
I would say maybe ask their owner about their temperaments or their parents' temperaments and decide based on that...

Big Boy is 17 months old and molting. He is my breeder, if I get around to breeding any cochins next year. I set a single egg this year, just needed a break. Anyways, he is a really gentlemen with the ladies. When he was growing up I did seperate him when he was going through those hormonal teenage years. That is when they can learn bad habits. He was in the lot during the day and in order to get girls to the fence he had to 'flirt'. At around 8 months old I let him run. I did not hand raise him so he is not pettable, but doesn't take off running like an idiot either.

When he was young the Dutch Roos, 1 pound bosses, were bulling him. He finally learned that if he just stood up to them the little farts had no idea what to do.

Why, oh why Lord...did I have to find this thread?? I didn't know Cochins came in large! I thought they were a bantam breed and nothing else.
