Large Fowl Cochin Thread

Hi there!
I fell for LF Cochins the first time I laid eyes on them years ago lol. I have a pair of white bantams also
and love them too, but the big guys are my favs! Seems they are getting more rare also. My LF's are
black giants. I would like to add some blue hens when I find some nice ones.
Great idea to start this thread:)
I know some one in kansas that sells blues her name is Caite Larson I bought a black from the same line and he won reserve in our state fair and he's a bog softy

I see two common tail weakness in Cochins. The first is the discussed "bunny tail". A good shape has the base of the tail feathers nearly as wide or wider than the shoulder section and not pinched in where the tail begins. Think circle (good) rather than figure eight (bunny tail) when viewed from above. The other common weakness is a pointed tail. Here the center tail feathers are stiff and longer giving the tail an end that is pointed. Think tear dropped shape (pointed) rather than the circle from above.

One consideration to keep in mind is the length of the back. Short back length helps to create that wider look. Longer backs can either looked pinched in and/or tend to be more pointed.

so you do want cochins to have bunny tails if you are going to breed or show them right?

Draco,

Nice looking blue cochins. The female by herself in front of the post has very nice type. If you breed her a blue male who's a bit darker in the hackle you can produce some nice birds.

Thank you Chris. I'll keep my eye out for a dark blue male or black. Very hard to find Cochins in my area. Even though her color isn't perfect I'm going to try to show her and see how she does. Thanks again for the advice much appreciated!

Chickgirl-

You do NOT want bunny tails for show/breeding unless that's all youve got and their other traits are great.

You want big wide round tails from the back to end.

Draco,

You're welcome. Starcochins, Jerry Smith in Georgia used to raise Large Fowl Blues. Apparently they sold the birds and the new owner kept their showname so you may be able to locate her online , facebook perhaps.

Bo Garrett in Oklahoma has LF Blues. I bought some of his Blue pen eggs last year at an Oklahoma auction. the hatch was tremendous. And the roosters I got are huge to the standard dark blues, black and one lighter blue. I took pictures this evening and will post them later this evening.
