Been struggling with this since we built the coop last year. Had plexiglass that could be adjusted which was okay, but way too fragile.

Hubby engineered this - now I can completely close off if needed for sideways storms or open up 5 inches at a time to allow for full window in hot Texas summers.

I like this but at the same time it makes me cringe a little. DON'T get me wrong, I think it is very clever and NICE looking. What gets me it the effort it will take to configure. I get that it will probably only be done a few times a year, still...

Have you thought of making a separator block strip. Use 1" Nylon Webbing and staple some blocks to it. Add first board insert block set, add next board insert block set, repeat. When it comes time to close it up just yank the blocks out. Would provide ventilation and Light. Keeping the spacing small will let in air but at the same time will act as a windbreak. Same for the light. This could very well even replace having any plexi at all. You also don't have to use all the blocks at one time. Skipping a block set here and there.

NOT saying that this will work exactly but if some sort of predator, like a racoon, comes along and tries to get in through the spacing, it could very well act to fight them off>. Since it might open up the slats, and when that happens the block might just fall off. Making the weight of the other boards come down on the would be thief.

Either way it looks nice.
