Please don't use the electric collar. Boxers love people and really want to obey. I have a coonhound/Rottweiler who came to us with a square burn scar that took months to heal. His previous owners( the dumpers) were probably trying to break him of his only problem. He barks at critters like cats, squirrels, coons, etc. He's a hunting dog, that's what he's SUPPOSED to do. All dogs eat yucky stuff. Your Boxer needs (positive) basic obedience, tons of excercise, and no time when he is unsupervised. You really have a diamond in the rough- the kind of dog that brings back fond memories decades after he's gone.

Oh Mamakate...I hate to hear that! That is definatley a case of neglect and abuse!! I hope your dog recovered. That is just so sad and definatley not the correct way to use a training tool. Any tool, even a flat collar can injure a dog used improperly.

gapeachy....I hope you can work all this out. It really is YOUR choice as to what your dog eats and how it behaves. No one should judge you for not wanting your dog to eat gross stuff. It may not be a problem in their home, but again it's THEIR dog and their choice. It does sound like you have a great dog....most Boxers are. Good luck!!!

Dogs eat poop. Just the way it is. Best thing I can tell you is--mint flavored dog biscuits!

Seriously, mine eat chicken poop, cat poop out of the litterbox, deer poop they find in the woods, and their all-time favorite is rabbit poop. You can teach them "leave it," but it's like asking them to leave a big meaty bone or a biscuit lying on the ground. They won't really do it unsupervised. I confine the cats' litterboxes to parts of the house the dogs can't reach (big dogs, little cat doors), keep 'em mostly on their leashes around the yard, and where they are off-leash--mint dog biscuits, Old Mother Hubbard or the Breathies Jerky kind.

My aunt used to have a Golden Retriever that would kill animals, then bury them, then dig them up a month later when they were half-rotten and THEN eat them. Then it would lick you with the nastiest breath ever, with bits of squirrel fur and snake skin hanging off its tongue. It was perfectly well-fed, even fat. Just nasty.

Some dogs are dirty slobs. Most drool, eat poop, bark, chew something you wish they wouldn't, and shed fur all over. Training helps sometimes, but can only do so much. They're dogs, it's how they are.

How did leave it work for you

i have used a eltrick coller too and it worked ok ( but i wouldn't give it to someone who is a new dog owner

I used to work for a vet that had dogs. They would clean up horse poo, hoof trimmings, and whatever else they could scavage. That's just the way they are. They are scavengers more than hunters, it's in their nature, they're developed for it, they can handle it. So, I guess, any vet wouldn't tell you that.

I'm not saying it's not gross, I'm just saying it's not harmful. Rabbits, chickens, and a variety of other animals excrete vitamins and minerals in their poo. Some digestive systems are not 100% adept at processing nutrition from their food. Food in the poo is reprocessed and absorped that second time because of chemical processes that have had more time to happen. Rabbits produce a special poop that they HAVE TO EAT or they will get sick. It comes out of their cecum, through the anus, and into the bunnies mouth. So, I don't think you should just dismiss poo eating out of hand. Just because it's gross doesn't mean it's unhealthy.

Gross, My dog is constantly eating my bunny poop and cat poop. And one time when the sewer backed up he thought he had died and when to heaven. Gross. I don't let him kiss me in the face to more.

Yes, my dogs have been caught sneaking a mid night snack of Cat poo from the litterbox.. GROSS..

or gulping down a dead mole or chipmonk found outside left behind by my one of my kitties.. I just ground them from hugs and kisses for a while and have them wormed every so often. Just the thought makes me cringe but that's a dog for ya..
