You should see what I have mine in for the winter! lol or atleast until they feather out more and can go into the shed/coop
I only keep the little ones in the house until they are a week to two weeks..after that they need to go cause the dust kills me

Wouldn't it still be to cold to put a 10 or 12 week old chick all feathered out, out in the barn in the winter after it's raised in a warm house? I would think it would be to much of a shock not being able to get used to the cold gradually

It shouldnt be an issue if you put them in a smaller area with a heat lamp. I have a good size heat lamp that i use and they go right under if they are cold. Plus I dont have alot of Bantam breeds ..I like standard mostly but still think the Bantam are cute!

Ya, that dust is a pain in the butt! Is it from the shavings or the birds themselves anyway!! I just put some in the shed we insulated and am thinking it needs some heat source...does the lamp really warm it up enough? How many watts is the bulb and is it the red ones??? I am afraid it will be too cold for the seramas and the modern games..the breeder told me their combs can get frostbitten and I have one that is dubbed and others that need dubbing...anyone know a dubber???

I insulated my small coop very well and put a 250 watt Red heat lamp in the coop and right now it's 85 degrees in there. I'm sure when it gets freezing out it won't be that warm but I think it will stay above 60. I'll soon find out. I'm sure your coop will stay warm enough for the Seramas with a good heat lamp. Some people don't even keep their Seramas heated in the Winter

Ya, I had read on BYC somewhere that ADULT seramas are good till 25 degrees...but i think thtat is cold..freezing as a matter of fact! IKathy, I have them all in seperate cages so everything breeds true and I know who are the parents of who so i am wondering if the heat bulb will keep eveyone warm because they are not is the position to huddle with each other, but Lisa, if it has been at 85, then it should keep abouve freezing in the bitter cold huh??? Or am I going to have to move evryone back into my studio again...Oh the dust, poo, and noise! Calgon, take me away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my father did the first year, then my mother had a fit about the electric bill so last yr he didnt, they are all on the top floor of the barn in small cages with plastic and honestly the water only froze a time or 2 up there. they did fine. in the spring they come outside into seperate breeder pens

That's what we do, anything that goes out right now we will put a heat lamp in the boxed in area of their little huts and reduce it a little at a time. Mostly just leave them on at night with a low watt bulb, moved some out a few days ago and all are doing great!! Course their huts are covered now with plastic too.

If my small heated coop starts to get crouded I'll have no choice but to close off a smaller area in the barn with a heat lamp. I'm just so afraid of heat lamps and fire. I had a heat lamp in the barn all last winter for my Pea chicks. I had it hanging from the ceiling by a big chain

Oh crap! I just remembered I have my Peacocks 12 foot octagon coop that I could use. My Peacocks will be going in the barn for the winter so it will be empty. It's not insulated but with a good heat lamp with won't be freezing. When was the first swap in Milford this year. That's what I used for my first chicks I got at the begining of the year and they were fine. They were able to get under the heat or away from it.. Darlene I think your coop will stay plenty warm for your adult Seramas. Especially if you insulated it

I hope you are right about that but last week when it was colder, i was freezing when i went in to feed and water...I have been trying to take up as much of the space inthere with bales of shavings so it is a smaller area, but I think I may still have to have some kind of heat source but now I see i have to wory about a fire...OMG, Why do I keep getting animals! arghhhhhhhhhhhh
