Last Year I Started Beekeeping - So Exciting

Day 6 with my bees. I did a hive inspection today as it's nice and warm and tomorrow it's supposed to be cool. I have absolutely no idea what I'm looking at, but I did see the queen (thanks to my 8 year old son - he spotted her before I did) and saw eggs in the cells. My 8 year old took the pictures, he likes to zoom in!

Saw eggs (look like mini rice?) in the dark yellow section here. I assume the light yellow is capped larva?

This section concerned me as it looked very different from the rest. What is the capped light/black area? Is that honey?

A good inspection, I would have like to peek some more, but I didn't want to disturb them. (plus, those frames are getting heavy!)

Also, the gloves aren't working for me, I can't grip the frames. I'm not brave enough to go with bare hands, anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking of trying the rubber dish washing gloves - they won't harm the bees, right?

Get a frame gripper. Check my pictures above and you will see what I mean.

I'm not sure what the black area is but someone on here might chime in.

Took a peek into hive #2 and those guys have been busy. I saw eggs, larva and capped brood. Didn't get to see the queen but she obviously is there. At least half the frames are full. So great to see this hive isn't giving me issues.

I actually saw something resembling that in my second hive except it was towards the top. Of course mine isn't honey, it's sugar syrup. They still have a lot of building to do.

A friend that has bees, says it's honey (probably mostly syrup since I'm feeding them) that just hasn't been fully capped yet.

Yes that would be your "Liquid Gold", "Nectar of the Gods" also know as "Bee Barf"!

We set up our first 3 beehives last week. It's so exciting to see them thriving and already working so hard. Looking forward to that honey next year.
