I'll show my ignorance (and since I can't see the photos to figure it out visually).....

Could you define lav x split and split x split ?

I'm just facinated in the whole color breeding concept.

Lav X split = lavender roo over hens which are black and carry the lav gene.

Split X split = black roo carrying the lav gene over black hens carrying the lav gene.

Oh, OK! Thank you! That makes total sense. So even if you get black hatchlings, you could potentially breed them to get lavender offspring, since they will be carrying the lav gene?

Lav X split = approx 50% lav and 50% split chicks

Split X Split = approx 25% lav, 50% split and 25% straight black chicks.

These are estimates and not always accurate, but statistically this is the result you should see for every 100 chicks.

I think I need to take a genetics course at the university. It has been 20 years since my last one! (especially since I seem to be attracted to genetic quirks... Frizzle, B/B/S and Lavender.)

I have a question.
Once they hatch and after they grow some, is there any way to tell which ones are split lav and which ones are black other than breeding them?

Hi, unfortunately there is no way to tell which black chicks are carrying the gene other than by test mating them,

if you would be lucky enough to hatch a visible lavender cockerel, which you very well may? you could just put him on all the hens and hatch like crazy and just select the lavenders from those hatches. That is the way i would go if just starting off with chicks from these lines..

**we just had a big hatch over night and some new lavender and black chick pic's are a coming today once in the brooder...!!!**
