Lavender Ameraucana Breeders .... UNITE

Pics
Hello! I finally got my batch of Lav's and Black from Paul Smith and this will be my starter flock for Lav's. We plan to show locally and look forward to seeing what we produce from these babies. They are still young but we will see how they mature.

I'm brand new to this breed and have three babies that just turned 6 weeks old. They look like 2 cockerels and 1 pullet. Here's my introductory silly questions:

Is Lavender an accepted color to show? Could my daughter enter these in the exhibition class at the fair?

I see lots of mentions of black. Will breeding 2 lavenders produce more lavenders or do you need to use blacks in there for some reason?

Thank you and I look forward to learning! They're such pretty chickens!

This is my understanding. Lavender is not yet an accepted color. It can be shown under AOV. Do you need a "showable" breed for the exhibition class?

Breeding two Lavenders will produce more Lavenders. The problem is the feather quality degrades because of the lav gene. That's why they are bred to blacks - to improve the feather quality. Breeding to blacks give you "Splits". They carry one lav gene. You need two lav genes (lav/lav) to have a Lavender bird. Breeding the splits back to Lavender will give you: 50% Splits (visually black but carrying lav) and 50% Lavender.

Yes, they are beautiful chickens. Mine are sweethearts too at 8 weeks old.

Lavender is not an approved color BUT you can still show them AOV. I think that is right i dont show.

The blacks are used to improve type and feather quality. The lavs will breed true but you need to keep blacks or splits in your flock.

I don't even have Ameraucanas but I just spent an hour reading through and admiring all your birds. Sooo beautiful! I hope you do manage to get it accepted as a color because it is absolutely amazing. I'm hoping to get some blacks and lavs next spring because I've just fallen in love with them. Thanks for sharing all the info and the lovely pics!

I understand that white chickens are not albinos but the white produced with no color to their eyes are. Those are a result of the modification gene applied to a modification gene will be a visual white . Thank you for pointing this out. I must not have been very clear on this point. There are many base colors and one of the truest is white as a color but the white I am talking about is the result of the two modifier coming together which have no base color to work on. These individuals can produce the most beautiful colors when bred back over the base colors. . Please remember I am a newbie to chickens and my so called experience in chickens is very three small clutches in Japanese bantams . I have already said that my experience with these chickens seem to verify my experience in breeding dogs and horses.

I would have to double check, but chickens only come in 2 base colors Black and Red (someone correct me if the red is wrong) ALL OTHER COLORS come from modifiers and diluters to make the wide colors chickens come in. Chickens are not white without those modifiers or whatever genes are needed to make them.

Example since this is a lavender ameraucana thread.... Lavenders are just black chickens with a diluter gene same with porcelain and Isabelle they just have the red genes and the Lav dilutes them to creamish colors.

I bow to your considerable years of experience in chickens. I am not here to debate on things I am rocky on at best. The person who started this line had only three people posting. I gave them something to work with because no one else did. In chickens I have been looking for links to establish a line based and which could be brought forward and to be extrapolated to chickens. I believe I have found this one on color and I am not sure we are not saying the same thing but Debates are things which do Not necessarily increase knowledge as we well know . In most cases debates tend to be destructive and a tool that a lot of people use to simply bash others.
