Lavender Ameraucana Breeders .... UNITE

This is what I have to work with -- the 2 Lavender pullets I kept (best of the worst) and my Black Ameraucana cockerel from Jean, If Jean is lurking on this thread I must insert at this point, Jean did not want me to keep this boy so you can't blame her for my choice but I like him. I hope her opinion of him might improve as he has matured.

Hello all. It's been a long hot summer again in Texas, although not as dry as last year's epic drought. I have been away from all threads for months and it will take me a while to catch up, if I even can.

Clare, that lav pullet with the peeper is NICE (as you know).

And thanks. I sent her pic to Paul and he suggested she would do well in AOV in Sedalia, but it is simply not in the budget. Heck of a drive for a nationals that is in the region. I am hoping there will be a decent judge(s) at our local APA show so I can some hands-on feedback.

I am no expert on Ameraucanas ( I just love them for there looks and personality ) this is some serious chicken eye candy

So this is a total newbe question. When you breed lavender to black for a split, they will all show up at black, right? I got both colors this spring. I've ended up with a pair of lavenders. I have 5 black cockrels and 5 black pullets. Obviously I'm keeping both lavenders. But will it be better to breed the 2 lavenders together or breed them with the blacks? These are all Blehm birds.

I don't like to breed splits to splits. I would use the Lav roo over the lav and split pullets. Keep your best 2 split roos as backups and you can then breed them to the chicks from the Lav roo. When you breed the Lav with splits you will get 50% each lav and splits.

If you breed the splits to splits you will get 50% SPLITS 25% LAVS and 25% Black... you can't tell the splits from the black... that is why I don't breed splits to splits.

I an wondering ~ Are the lavender Ameraucanas a recognized variety at this time? If so, are they called lavenders or self blues? Thanks

Lavs are not APA approved color.... some of that debate is the name.

I have had three persistently broody hens ALL summer and have not raised much beyond what I was able to hatch out in the spring due to lack of eggs.

I have one lav pullet that I still love, you guys will get to know her as #40. She is third generation for me. I'll try to bathe and clean her up and get some pictures at some point.

I have been downsizing around here lately and have been able to provide a couple of families with pairs and trios to give them their start with this variety and look forward to seeing where they take them. I am currently down to seven lavender females and plan to reduce that number to probably three or four and go from there.

I am growing out a black Smith cockerel who will hopefully be nice and I would like to make some more splits using #40 if he turns out.

I have many emails to answer and much catching up to do. Thanks everyone on this thread for your dedication to this variety. I know it is daunting at times.
