Hi all,

I have 11 total 6/7 and 5/6 week old chicks and most of them I'm starting to be able to tell who is who, we've got a lot of rounded tail and hackle saddle feathers coming in but this lavender Easter egger is giving me a little bit of trouble. She's 6 weeks old almost 7 weeks old now at this point and while her features to me seem pullet, since her feathers are pretty rounded, but that big swoopy tail and her size is giving major cockerel vibes lol.

What do we think?

Those tail feathers will molt out quickly, and don't mean anything at that age. The comb seems a little large for its age but otherwise this looks to be a pullet to me.
Awesome! I was just curious cause her tail seems so much longer and swoopy compared to everyone else but know those male tail featehrs generally dont develop for awhile longer but I'm definitely no expert. She's a goofball either way haha

I agree and at that age none of the boys will have their pointed saddle feathers.

Thanks! Figured it was probably too soon and a long shot to tell yet at 7 weeks
The obvious boys with massive (especially single) combs, you can often tell quite a bit earlier.

For feather shape, the earliest I think I've seen male saddle feathers start to grow in was 8-and-a-bit weeks old. 12 weeks is more usual though, and some are slower than that.

Gotcha! That makes sense I have a leghorn and I know both males and females have big floppy combs so I'm trying to take hers with a grain of salt lol but everyone else's so far are pretty small and dainty combs and no wattles to speak of yet. Guess we'll see in a few more weeks!
