Lavender Orpington help

Here's a couple more pics! Ignore the mud puddle in the background. We had a giant monsoon storm roll through on Monday and things are still drying out. It was crazy! 😵‍💫

Hello! A year or so ago I raised 4 Lavender Orphingtons. They are very hard to sex with the frazzel tail feathers. And the combs aren`t much help either! I really didn`t know for sure until three of the four started crowing and displaying cockerel behavior. Sadly, I lost the only hen to a badly impacted crop... 😥 She was such a sweet bird! 🙂

So one of my lavender orpington hens has similar sized comb at six months old, but it took time to get that size. All three of our lavender orpington hens have different sized combs.

I'm going to guess cockerel, but only because of the curved feathers at the rear.

The comb is throwing me off for sure. I don't see spurs starting, but I also am not entirely sure when they would start to pop. The feathers are making me crazy! I would love to know so if she is a he I can take him and our other little guy to a rescue nearby. We live in a neighborhood so we can't have roosters. Which is a bummer cuz our other guy is a porcelain d'uccle and just so cute.

A few more pictures. I haven't heard any crowing, or attempting to crow, from her. I know her tail feathers kind of curve down but could that be from the shredder gene? I still don't see any spurs starting. This girl is driving me crazy. 🤪

Ours have the same frizzled butt feathers. At first I thought something was wrong with them until I learned it's linked to their recessive coloring.

I'm still guessing cockerel, but the body shape in the photos is round like our hens. If it were me, I'd keep waiting. As you can see, our hens have massively different comb sizes, Violet with a tiny speckled comb, Peony with a big red floppy one.

Note for the concerned: yes, those are huge melon chunks. It's 95F with an inversion and smoke from a nearby fire. There are more chickens than pictured. Just trying to cool the birds down.

Looks like a cockerel to me but the shredder gene throws things off a bit for sexing.

I find Lavenders hard to determine sex! I raised 5 a year ago and they gave me fits trying to determine sex! Ended up 4 cocks and one pullet which sadley I lost... Comb looks like a cockerel and so do the drooping saddle and tail feathers! But from what I can see looks like rounded tip hackle feathers! Inconclusive! You should know soon though! 😊
