Lavender Orpington Thread

So I found some LO's about 50 miles from me. They were just hatched this weekend. She is wanting $6 a chick or 10 for $50. I've been wanting some for a while now so I will be going to get some. I'm just wondering if that price sounds about right? I tried looking them up from online hatcheries and the only prices I could find were like $20 a piece.

The Lav Ameraucanas I got locally, I paid $7 each.

Great! I was planning on getting them anyways just because I've been wanting them for a while. But it's good to know I'm getting a good price for them. Thank you!

Hi everyone! This is my 12 week old lavender orp. His name is Maybelline :)

That's how I felt about LOs when I 1st saw them.  I ended up buying some hatching eggs from breeders.  It takes 4-6 weeks to know the gender.  For me the problem is that as soon as we hatch lav orps, they sell out within 1-3 days.  Sometimes we'll have a 1 month black orp, but never a lav orp older than a week for sale.  My DD is always coming up with great poultry science experiments, so we must sell her "results," because we have limited coop space.

If you do decide to hatch your own chicks, it's rarely a problem to give away male lav orps.  Also, we got about a 50% hatch rate with shipped eggs.  When we drove 3 hrs to pick up the fertile lav orp eggs, we got 100% hatch!!!

Same here! Can't keep any to grow out lol!
They have also hatched very well for me. I've never done any shipped, but have shipped a few of my eggs, and folks have had decent hatches with them also.

Great price! I sell mine $10-$12 each.

Remember price does not dictate quality. The market dictates price for the average type birds. Some are over priced and some are under priced. Some breeders are perticular what they are breeding and some think that two lavenders are sufficient enough to make money.
