One week old lav babies

Lavender rooster crossed with an Easter Eggs mama

If you post a pic I can probably help. My lav boys hatched March 30th, so about 10 wks. An 11 wk old female (like below) will have much smaller comb/wattles.

Some males feather slower & still have a porcupine look at 6 weeks. (Mine do not) For my lav orps, it's all about the giant comb. Many chicks have their combs pop up & get pink between 3-4 weeks.

Here are some current pics of my chicks:
Pullet 5 wk old - hardly any comb & no color, smaller wattles, stands with rounded or flat back.

Male (almost 4wk old)- has a noticeable pink-red comb with wattles and stands more vertically. Since everyone wants to buy females, I simply give male chicks away to any customers who can legally own them.

This is Maui a few weeks ago. Maui is 11 weeks old. No crowing. No tail really. It's hard to tell.

This is Maui a few weeks ago. Maui is 11 weeks old. No crowing. No tail really. It's hard to tell.

Maui looks like a tricky one, but he's looking more male than female. His wattles look like they're dropping & the comb's getting taller. Some males crow early & I've had some wait until age 5.5 months before even attempting.

I've found that my orps are not frequent crowers like a loud EE I once had. In fact, our current lav orp actually has a soothing low-pitched crow. The males sleep in our garage to prevent them from waking us up. I let them out at 8am & they crow a couple times as they chase the hens & in under 5 min, things are back to normal. If I hear crowing during the day it usually means there is something setting them off & I go out to do a safety check.

There are also anti-crow collars. (BTW- They don't work well for all roos - like that obnoxious EE! But for my lav orp it makes him more quiet than a car driving down the street, dog barking, kid playing, or even a wild robin or morning dove.) You may want to keep Maui until you hear crowing & re-evaluate at that point. (Unless it's illegal or upsetting your neighbors, of course.)

Thank you so much, Maui's supposed to be a pullet but I'm think more cockerel. I was thinking about purchasing a no crow collar. Maybe I will get one just in case he does. I'm aloud to have roosters but my neighbors have already commented on the rooster topic

Hopefully Maui won't be too bad. What won my neighbors over (besides the eggs) was watching my daughter play with her pet rooster. She gave him wagon rides up & down the sidewalk, played dress up, and carried him like a baby doll. That EE roo had an awesome personality & accompanied me to many school programs, but his crow was too much for even me to bear. Although my neighbors never complained (and even encouraged), he was a spotlight telling the world we had chickens. We all cried when he left, but our current boys are great too. Just make it clear for your neighbors to talk to YOU about it if they are bothered. They may or may not have issues, and in the long run, giving up one rooster to keep the peace isn't all that bad.

BTW- We kept him for 16 mo. The neighborhood was so quiet when he left & I actually got 3 calls asking, "What happened to Brownie?"
