Hi everyone! I am suppose to be picking up 6 lavender orpingtons that hatched late last summer and they are making room for more chicks, so I am buying the older hens. Does anyone have any advice on what to look for? We are just getting them for eggs and to be family pets. We have a enclosed coop/ run for the girls. They haven't started laying yet, but should be soon. It will be our families first time having hens and we are so excited. I fell in live with the lavenders as soon as I saw the beautiful birds! :)

When you go pick them up, make sure they look healthy...bright eyes..eating and pooping normal...look for mites (normaly youll see them on the face and legs if infested)..they should be out and about being active! Make sure they are not limping and check their feet. Give them a good going over before you put them in your car.
Congrats on getting the Lavs! They are great birds, you wont be disappointed!!

Hello all. I have a ~7 week lav orp, Laverne, who we're pretty certain is a Verne (pronounced pink comb and wattles coming in). I am in the Bay Area near San Francisco, can't have roos here. Best bet is Craigslist or here or...? And how much does one ask for for a rooster? $10? More? Thanks in advance for your help!

Here's a pic of le Verne (along with the rest of our chicks):

I've decided to keep my lavenders and get a rooster for them. I have buff, black, and australorps, so might as well make them all a colony, then the babies will all be het lavender anyway! Anyone in Florida have a 2 month old or older Lav roo for sale?
