Lavender Orpington Thread

Pics
Here are some of my babies I hatched kind of excited.

Oh, they are so sweet! It looks like you made them stand from smallest to tallest.

Thanks for the picture and I hope that you keep them coming. It is so very exciting isn't it! This was the first time we ever hatched out from our own chickens, and it was so much more stressful/exciting, Are either of the roosters you had asked about the father? How long have you been working on your project? Do you see any major differences in them yet? Did you incubate or have a broody? How many Lavender Orpingtons do you have? Hope you don't mind the questions, I just really enjoy them. Enjoy their fluffy stage, they are so stinking cute.

Actually these babies I hatched out of some local eggs. I have been growing out some splits to cross with my lavender roos they were march babies so should be ready to breed in August. I am hoping to work on getting them more up to English standards but that will take time. I will keep everyone posted I also found out I am getting some lavender pullets in August that will be at point of lay that is also very exciting.

At what age will the combs start to turn pink (for roos)? I have suspected that I've got 2 females & 2 males since age 3 1/2 weeks - based on comb size alone. Now at 6 weeks only one has a light pinkish comb. Are there any other traits to look for? (besides crowing or eggs) I can send a pic tomorrow when we have daylight.

Gender Predictions Age 6 weeks + 2 days I was told they are mostly from English Orpington bloodlines if it matters.
Chick 2 got the comb with pink hue at about 3 weeks, slightly slower to feather.
Chick 1 still has very petit comb- looks pink only when hot outside. Gets separation anxiety when away from the other chicks.

Same chicks when they were 3 1/2 weeks old

#2 is a cockerel based on comb and slow tail growth . #1 is a pullet .

Yea for pictures! Very nice looking chicks, and a very cute daughter. Well, my very uneducated guess is number 1 a girl number 2 a boy, giving you a great looking pair. Strangely though, in the close up of number 2 the comb does not look nearly as big or pink as when he is on the table. I assume the head shots are actually of both and that the one on the right is actually number 2? I will sit back and see what the actual professionals say.

What is funny about this is Holly the smaller of Megan's two is always trying to get under Charlotte, and gets upset when they are separated too, I always placed as a boy, while the bigger one Charlotte (who would almost mother Holly) as the girl, only her comb and waddle sure is getting pink, so it is the opposite of what I think yours are.

Help4Me:

Both head shots are number 1. The comb of number 1 is pink in the heat, but still small. (Hoping its a pullet.) Number 2's comb can be seen from a distance, so I didn't both with a close up. Its comb started growing & turning pink around 3 weeks old. I've always believed #2 to be a boy, but am posting to confirm.
My kids gave them names: Number 1= named Cuddles by my daughter - weird if its a boy Number 2= named Tank by my son. (Of course he named his hen Firefighter, so we never know what to expect when he claims a chick as HIS.)

Tank is much calmer, but since he may not stay, we don't work with him. We started training Cuddles. She can do a few silly chicken tricks that amaze the neighbors.

Oh, now that makes sense, see what happens when I assume, sorry. I love the names, and yes we have had some funny ones too when Jack names his chicks. Poor Jack, every chick he has been given or claims as his own we have to get rid of. Just today I listed his 3 cockerels on craigslist and 45 min later they were picked up! O.K. now, I just have to know what kind of tricks? Do you have a clip. the kids would love to see it!
