Lavender Orpington Thread

May I add he stated that there are some very FINE blue orps out there and if you want to use blue rather than black to go for it. You follow the same rules as you would for a black cross.

We have a hen and rooster lavender orpington. She hatched 3 chicks and I was surprised to see they are a light black with mix of lavender on them and their underside is yellow! I thought lavender was born lavender?? Any ideas on what they are and why they hatched a different color? I will get a picture of them later today.

I hatched 10, one of which came out black. Its cute as a button. From what I have read, if its a hen, it will still produce lavender chicks, and if its a rooster that mates with a lavender, the chicks will still be lavender. Does that sound incorrect to anyone?

I just hatched 6 Lavender Orpingtons... Any tips on gender predictors?

I hatched 10 a little over 4 weeks old and they all still look alike!! Size is about the only difference. I had read that the flight feathers grow longer faster on the females in the first 5 days, and I looked at mine then, but didn't mark which ones I thought were male or female.... so now I'm playing the waiting game. Some of their combs are just starting to grow bigger than others, which I assume is a roo indicator, but I don't really know. From what I have been able to find, this is one breed that is difficult to sex because they can mature very slowly. I would like to know the average age that they start crowing, if anyone can answer that?? So if you found info somewhere else, I'd love to know what you found.
Oh, one other thing that I noticed... the spot under their chin where the wattles will eventually grow from.. I have a few that the area looks wider, like maybe its going to grow bigger wattles. I don't know.

Here are pics of 2 that I took this morning.
