Such beautiful chickens you all have! Here are my 2 LO's I puchased from MPC. I ordered one female and one straight run. The first "Minnie Pearl", is a pullet but I'm not so sure about the second. He/she feathered out at the same rate and is about the same size however the comb is much different. What do you all think? Either way I'll be happy :)

My guess is that the second one is male. Here were some of mine at 10 weeks. The male pictured was an over-achiever & matured fast. His brother had a slightly smaller comb/wattles.

Thank you

. He just isn't acting like a cockerel.....he behaves like all the other pullets. The comb does having me believe you are correct tho

I find that as chicks, the boys are the friendliest. They're always the 1st to jump into your hands for snuggles & treats. Quickly they become favs, (I joke with my daughter that whichever chick she falls in love with is always going to be a male.)

Looking for suggestions for ordering LO chicks for spring.

I, sadly, made the mistake of purchasing week old chicks from a Craigslist ad. I was supposed to get several LO - long story short I only got 2 LO and a mixture of other chicks to make up the difference. Apparently they came infested with round worm as I've now lost 5 of the original 8 - same symptom - either sudden death or paralyzation followed by death. Necropsy at the university vet lab determined round worms had gone to the brain.

The remaining 3 are kept separate from my other chicks and have been treated with wormer recommended for round worm. So far no sign of problems in them and all other chickens are healthy.

I had a roo and hen LO and loved them - such lovely chickens!!! Broke my heart to lose any of the birds. I am looking to purchase from a hatchery or known breeder who ships chicks. I live in east central MN. I've found only two hatcheries who offer LO - just wondered if I might be missing a network somewhere that connects potential owners with chicks.

Thanks so much

Sorry you lost birds to such circumstances. Do you do any incubating? Hatching eggs may be easier to come by. Best of luck replacing your LOs!

I hatched mine & love how tame they are. 1st time was with shipped eggs. 60% hatched, but I now know that I was lucky.

The second time I hatched LOs, I bought the eggs from a small breeder 3 hrs away. I had a reason to drive by while visiting family, so we arranged a meeting along my route home. I got 100% hatch!!! Definitely worth the effort & the quality is outstanding. (They're English orps, so very BIG & round looking.)
