Thank you CJ - At times, for me, it is like throwing spaghetti up against the wall (to see what sticks). Sort of 'thinking out loud' kind of things -- so that is just one more reason why any other views and ideas will be so welcome.

I'm right there with you -- I want to understand this stuff better-- there is a narrow band that I think I know -- but there are worlds of things were I know zilch. (but at least I know I don't know).

Ok, took these two pictures after the big storm. Please excuse the dirty feet and feathers as it is very muddy here.

There aren't much feathers on the feet though. So need a lot improvement to be called a maran

Thanks for posting -- I couldn't quite picture it, and now I can! -- that is a cute chick.

It rained a lot here too - and one pen with Isabels has a place where the mud is soup and they seem to enjoy wading ankle deep -- just so they can mess things up ( like their eggs for example. )

You inspired me to take a mud shot -- these are funny. The weight of the mud on their feet makes them lift their feet extra to walk....







have you ever had mud that is so sticky it pulls your boot off or your shoe off? That's what they are dealing with I think, in their very own mud hole.

Certainly Did! When we first moved to here, there was no grass coverage on our land (used to be farm land and then divided to parcels and sold to real estate development company. We have black clay dirt and that really got me at the beginning. The house was never clean because of the dogs and mud they brought in the house. My boots often got stuck in the mud and pulled off. Now it is much better, but not the chicken area. I let anything grow as long as they cover the soil...

Good thinking...any ground cover is better -- and when weeds are mown they look presentable IMO. Usually when your boot or shoe gets sucked by the mud you have already taken that next step and -- squish.
